That’s a lovely picture of Mow, she’s a very striking hen, great pose, shows off her “tiara” beautifullyChilly at 7C with a mist and on and off drizzle.
Dig is learning. We were having a couple of roosting time problems. Dig tries pulling the hens off the roosts bars to mate with them. The first time I broke this up, Dig pecked me and it was meant to hurt. I swept him straight of the floor and threw him out of the coop. He looked pretty surprised. Of course the pop door was shut. I sat out with him until it was close on dark, picked him up and put him on the roost bar next to Mow, got him to settle and closed up. He hasn't tried to peck me when I've got my hands in the coop since.
The hen grabbing business is to be expected but I would prefer if it didn't go on inside the coop at roost time. It seems to be getting better. What doesn't help is Fret, his mother, will crounch for him, while Carbon is most definitely not interested. He doesn't bother Mow much.

Are you going to let either of them hatch eggs?It stayed dry and at 7C was out of the cold fingers territory. Two hours today.
It was breezy with 35mph gusts. The chickens came out for a forage and headed back to the allotment run for the last half an hour.
It looks like Mow has laid her first egg. It could be an undersized egg from Fret but the shape is wrong. More blueish eggs.
Carbon hasn't laid yet. She older than Fret and has been quite a prolific layer in the past.

I'm expecting a difficult year. Fret has already gone broody again.

The probability is Mow will go broody. She gets maximum forage in her time out of the coop run. She eats things that Carbon won't, or her brother Dig.

I love long Summer days, but it's wasted when we have to be indoors because of extreme heat. You must be looking forward to it, although I may be projecting my hatred of summer heat.![]()
Henry and Dig have starteed bowling each other off any hen they try to mate. So far niether make much of an issue out of these interuptions.
Have you thought about hen saddles? I have had hens injured because of this.Henry and Dig have starteed bowling each other off any hen they try to mate.
