Chilly but dry this afternoon. I spent three and a half hours with them today.
Carbon died overnight. She didn't leave the nest box.
Henry definitely missed her today. I think everyone will in their fashion.
This is what's left of the 26 chickens I started with a few days short of three years ago.

You gave her three years of living as a chicken, not a battery hen. That's a good thing.

Are any of the chicks from her eggs?

I had In Albis start slowly dwindling then die.

Peaceful journey to Carbon, a tough bird who went from humble beginnings to being named and appreciated for her spirit. How nice that her last years included so much time hunting for the worms and berries she loved.

Her poofy head will be missed.

Carbon, and after her Fret and Henry, have been given decent conditions to end their life in, thanks to you. Surrounded by a small family, in a clean house, with the possibility to forage every day for a bit.
Day and night from the first hens who kept dying in the first months you were there.
