Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

A couple of hours today. Cold and damp.

I really enjoyed having Cillin roosting in my house. I used to talk to him from my bed which is a couple of metres away from the nest box in the living room.
After a couple of days of Cillin sleeping in the nest box, which was still being used in the day to lay eggs in, I fitted the pet carrier to the nest box which meant at night I could put the nest box lid on and cover that with a towel. Cillin would want to go to sleep at dusk, while I would still have things to do and needed the light on. The top and towel was a decent compromise. This is Cillin in the lower half of the pet carrier getting supper in bed.

This is how he started off.

This is what I lashed up for him as his own coop.

I've got better pictures somewhere.

I remember seeing these on FBA.

I've watched a few lay myself and it really makes you appreciate what goes into that egg.
I learnt a lot by having a house nest box. Centrachid has some interesting keeping arrangements and behaviour observations but Game Fowl do seem to be closer to feral than the tribes and game fowl roosters from what I've learned are less tolerant of other males.

He moved in with me for a couple of months. For a few days he tried to get into the tribes coop at dusk. Treacle wasn't having any of it and adopted a zero tolerance of Cillin being anywhere near the tribe. For the first few days I tried to encourage him to keep with the tribe but I would find him late evening on his own hanging around outside the main coop. He came back to my house eventually and after getting fed he got into the house nest box which of course he was very familar with and roosted there. I used to let him out in the morning and he would come home looking depressed late evening. There were lots of complicating circumstances. I was very sad having brought Cillin up after his mother got killed while he was young. I built him his own coop eventually. He knew it was for him and the day I finished it he moved in. I left Catalonia shortly after. There are pictures and some of the story on By Bobs thread but I have no idea where.

With hindsight I should have started my own thread when I joined BYC, but I didn't and I've pictures and stories spread all over the site and no real idea of what's where.

For the first five years of living in Catalonia I didn't have a camera, wasn't on BYC and only have written notes. A lot can happen in five years. I didn't have a camera when I worked on the free range farm, nor when I worked on my uncles farm.

What you may find interesting is this.

Many thanks for this, and for the link to the other thread, which I had missed (one of many such probably). It's very helpful; lots of other interesting stuff there too :)

I still let the chooks in my office, but I sometimes wish they nested here. They just didn't like me moving around:

This is Dominica trying to figure out why I don't have twigs on my desk. She thought the cable coming off of the keyboard was sufficient. She eventually left my desk for the real box.
