Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Speaking for myself, I've got better things to do than trial and error with what someone else thinks is 'intuitive'. Yes, I am the sort that reads the manual 🤨
But all these apps have settings and information to find out how to do these things, so if you're reading the manual, you'd find that out.

Honestly, TikTok is incredible for privacy.

I have a profile, no one can see who I follow. No one can see what videos I like, no one can see who my friends are, *I* get to choose who sees what on my profile and I've locked it down. No one can follow me, I've locked that down. No one can see what I post (I don't make posts, but I could and then share them with individual people)

Recently, I had to login to Facebook (it's unavoidable, most poultry breeders and local farms use it) and I was able to lock that completely down, too. It's all in there, in the settings. There is no mystery, it's just looking.

I suppose, for me, since I've been doing all of this since forever, it is intuitive. Hell, as a side hustle I train AIs with data annotation. Maybe I just take my internet literacy for granted, which is highly possible.

You can longpress on any social media (or right click on desktop) and click "not interested"

It informs the algorithm of your interests.

Some people can't figure this out, I guess just nuking the whole app is their option.

My YouTube shorts and TikTok feed is full of cozy things, chickens, DIY, crochet, gaming shorts about particular games I play, fantasy books - but only people over 40 who are the reviewers, the TikTok algorithm is *excellent* but you might have to take a minute to train it.

I tried the not interested option on YT. It was there, not a right-click. And yet, I keep getting suggestions for hot Ukrainian women. Umm, y’all? I’m not the demographic for this. I’ve no idea what started this. I’ve never viewed anything about Ukrainian women, hot, cold, or lukewarm, other than news feeds about surviving through the assaults, but onward they come.

I’ll try the longpress method next time. The provided button seems a joke.

What they provide - the few I've looked at - is not what I call a manual. It's a quick start guide at best.

It might be. But I don't have a smart phone, so that is an ecosystem I simply do not inhabit. I have no interest in following anyone. This is my only internet presence, and it's quite enough for me thanks.

I get that too. Fortunately I have retired so I don't *have* to use anything. And at my age I've generally already got whatever I might think I want to buy, or know where to get it, so I'm not often searching for product either. I consider myself lucky to not need most of what's on offer online, and make a point of using the human option (like a checkout) and cash whenever possible, to help keep these things going, because the digital world is not very resilient, however secure or private it might be.

Youtube is terrible about learning sometimes. I was getting a bunch of Indian youtube content recommended to me. I can't even read the language and youtube kept pushing it. I told it to quit recommending it and it took it a couple weeks or so to quit.

Yeah, YouTube is WAY worse than TikTok for learning you. Like everything online related, you have to curate it - people would complain about Twitter being a cesspit, but if you only follow lovely people (back when I used it, I followed UK farmers and archaeologists and some fantasy illustrators) my feed was amazing!!

It takes a modicum of effort to do it, but as Perris so perfectly described, if you don't want to use it, there is simply no need to worry about any of it.

I just find that it's a nice off-switch to my otherwise AuDHD brain, I scroll and enjoy it immensely, for an hour or so a day. I've learned a ton on TikTok, gotten ideas, sparked interest in hobbies -- and most importantly, felt very seen. VERY seen. Any video that pops up that I don't like I just longpress>not interested and that seems to work. On TikTok at least.

Definitely agree with you on the other points.

Not sure about this one. So far I’ve seen both extremes (which do seem to be what circulate the most on those platforms); they can be both a great threat and a great ally to democracy
True if it was just honest people who contribute. But commerce and intriguing have been taken over too much of the anti social online communication nowadays.

Why do you think we have so many influencers? Bc it works!

When people who have a totally locked profile reply to a FB ad of mine, I am very Leary. Red flag and alarm bells go off for me.
I would like to see years worth of history, interests and friends before I have them show up to buy. I usually sell first to someone I can see and get a feel for them .

What gets me is people who's most of the profile is locked, but they have pictures of their kids with school sports uniforms on. Gee let's setup for the lunatics to grab them.

I get those ads from time to time as well. So far, I’ve just ignored them. I suppose it’s YT’s version of conversion therapy, highly unsuccessful so far

I am out of my depth in this tech convo.
I use YouTube for posting chicken videos in BYC and for instructional stuff I need to learn how to do something.
I don’t know that it has ever recommended anything to me.
I sort of have a Facebook account (long story - wasn’t created by me) and have not tried to grasp how Facebook works so I haven’t seen it recommend anything to me except potential friends that I think it pulls out of my WhatsApp address book.
