I've had ghost experiences but the one I want to share didn't happen to me - it happened where we used to live.
This is not a fable/tale/ghost story that you pass around - it really happened. Shortly after it happened, it ended up being retold on a TV program. I tried to find something about it online to refresh my memory but couldn't.
It happened in the early 90's, East of Placerville, CA. P'ville is an old gold mining town in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Highway 50 runs through it and is a favorite route to Lake Tahoe. The old Pony Express ran along the same road and there are still mile markers.
It is freeway between Placerville and Pollock Pines but east of that, it turns into a twisty, two lane, mountain road. At night it can be very dark. A woman and her small child (my mind says 18 months old but might have been younger) were driving the dark road between Pollack Pines and the other small mountain communities along Highway 50 and had a single car accident. No one had any idea that her car had plunged off the mountain road, down a gulley. I believe she was killed at that time but the little boy was alive in his carseat. I seem to remember that a missing person's report was filed but no one knew where to look. They had no idea about the accident.
Two strange incidences helped them find the wreck and get to the boy days later, before he died from exposure and dehydration.
A couple were driving east on Hwy 50 when to the woman's surprise she saw a naked woman laying on the side of the road. She alerted her husband and they turned around to check but found nothing. She was sure she saw her so they noted the mile marker, and drove on home to call the sheriff.
The sheriff thought it was weird but went out to look. The search party drove up and down the highway and found nothing. They checked the area carefully, physically getting out of the car and looking over the sides of the road in case the woman had fallen over. Nothing. They carefully noted everything, looking for a clue about where the body might be. Nothing. They finally decided that either the woman hadn't seen what she thought or someone was playing tricks on passing cars - they didn't find any trace of anything.
It nagged at one deputy and he decided to go drive the route again, just in case. This time, as he drove up the highway something caught his eye - a baby shoe sitting out in the middle of the road. He turned the car around, pulled over to the side, got out and picked up the shoe. From the point where he saw the shoe, he walked over to the side and could see something metal. He'd found the car. At first, he assumed that the mother must have dragged herself up to the roadside above but returned to the baby but she was still seatbelted in place and she was fully clothed. Upon examination, they decided that she had died on impact. The baby was fine but cold and dehydrated. I can't remember if he was missing a shoe or not but they wondered why when the area was being searched for the woman's body, did no one notice a shoe on the road. It was right there in plain sight when found.
I think the mother was behind it all - she wanted her baby to live. She caused the vision on the side of the road, made the deputy feel uneasy so he'd return and somehow made that shoe suddenly become obvious to point out their location.
