I grew up in the coal mining country of East Tn. and East Ky. My great grandmother was born in 1888 and passed away in 1978, when she was in her thirties there came a sighting of a ghost woman dressed in white with a dim lantern walking around ringing a bell in the town cemeteryand you would only see her during a storm. The sighting was by some miners walking to work on the night shift. One night the milk cow got out of the barn (they always locked them up so they would be there to milk in the morning) she tore out of the barn somehow and went to the nearby cemetery to graze. Long about dark ( yes they went to bed with the chickens) Granny heard the cow bell ringing and woke up, went to the barn in her nightgown and lantern to find the cow was gone so she started walking toward the sound of the bell and by the time she figured old bossy was in the graveyard it was coming a storm not alot of rain but lots of lighting, wind, and thunder. She said that she came upon the cow just grazing away and started driving her back to the barn, well old bossy had found her some good grass and wasnt about to leave! She chased her all around the graveyard and finally got her back to the barn. The next day it was all over town about this sighting . Grannys husband got killed in the mine the next day and about a week they moved to Tn. she never told anyone in that town that it was her chasing old bossy that night. The old tale still lives on in that community today about the woman dressed in white running around in the graveyard ringing a bell and holding a lantern on a stormy night.

My father died in 98. He had died from cancer that had moved to his brain, it was like a si-fi movie for 6 weeks. We would hear voices whispering outside the front door and go see who was there, no one, Dad would hug and kiss thin air. Lots of stuff like that. Anyway the day of his viewing my sisters and I went early and I walked up the the casket and looked, I thought I must have the wrong room, one of my sisters came up and was thinking the same thing. So the undertaker came over and asked if something was wrong. We asked where our father was. You should have seen the look of surprise on his face. He said,"This is your father!" Well you would have to have known my father , everyone loved him because he was always kidding and just plain fun, but he was 80 when he died. Well I burst out laughing uncontrollable and my sister asked what was wrong with me. I told her that's daddy playing George Burns!!!!!! And she looked closer and said OMG! Well it made the whole furneral thing alot easier to deal with. But right after that I went to the bathroom right across from the casket with dad in it. I shut and locked the door, had to walk like 8 big steps to the commode, sat down, creeeeeeak, the door slowly opens! I jump up just dropping the hem of my dress, not bothering with anything else.... and go shut the door and LOCK it again, wiggled the handle, and everything was fine. I go back to try again and the door sloooowly opens again! I got to laughing so hard I was crying!!! I called my sister over and said HOLD THAT D*** Door so I can pee, Dad is playing his tricks on me again! The undertaker over hear us and said he had never had that problem with the door before. I told him it was just Dad because I called him George Burns....

I have had a few "I think that is what I just saw" but the one I know what I saw! I used to board my horse at a friend of mines house. I know that they had had some weird things going on and they were fine with it and have just grown to deal with it, never anything bad. Well they had been having problems with someone coming into the barn and the horses would be in the wrong stalls. They suspected the little girl next door who frequently came over to visit the horses. They set up a survalence camera out at the barn. They had the monitor in the kitchen. One day we had just come in from riding and we were just sitting in the kitchen jibber jabbering away, had nothing better to look at, so we were talking and looking at the monitor. Well I tell you, no joke, something came walking out of the back of the barn, did a u-turn and went back in! I looked out the window and saw nothing! I looked at my friend and asked her if she saw that, she said yepp....like it was nothing! We kinda figured there might be something out there, we always heard footsteps up in the hay loft, but never thought more about it.
There are many more stories of that house, a lot went on over many years and still does!

Oh and they did catch the little girl on camera!

Just thankfull it isn't my house!!!

woohooo my kinda link ! I have worked as a Psychic Medium for a number of years now and there is nothing any cooler then EVP, spirit photography, EMF and temp readings. I have actually been called by police departments in search for missing people. I do not say this as to get "business" but just that its such a loaded question when you ask about Hauntings and ghost stories.

I've had more experience that I can write about.

When I was about 16 I woke up in the middle of the night to find my Godmother standing in the room. I remember talking to her and her telling me goodbye. We talked for a while, I don't remember all the details. It was enough that my Mum came into my room and asked who I was talking to. Being the middle of the night I just said nobody and she thought I was talking in my sleep ( I was sitting on the edge of the bed)

The next morning when I got up I told her I was talking to my Godmother and that she had died and came to tell me goodbye. My Mum told me it was just a dream and there was no way my Godmother was dead, she was barely 40.

Before noon that day we got a call to say my Godmother who lived several hours away had passed in the night. Several months later I got up one morning and told my Mum that my Godfather had passed away
( Godmothers husband) so this time she called his house and his son answered saying they had found him dead in bed that morning. Needless to say my Mum never questions me now.

This isn't really scary, or a direct encounter, but a lady died of a heart attack in our house (in the office, in fact, where I am typing this). There's one room, the guest room, that is very cold, and sometimes you can sorta feel a "presence" in the basement and other areas too, but I don't think she means us any harm. I guess she just liked the house and wants to see how it's doing.

ETA: There is also an old hospital on Great Diamond Island (where my grandmother used to live; it used to be an army base in WWII and many of the buildings are still standing. You can find glass and pottery from that era on the beaches, and there's a cool little lookout post out in the woods) and all of the island kids (me too!) are totally and utterly convinced that it's haunted. There is also the spooky Double Barracks, which has its fair share of stories, and barred buildings that you have to pass to get to Seaglass beach that sends shivers up our spines. Another creepy story surrounds a strangely shaped tree, the Dog Tree, that is said to consume someone every full moon of July. Great Diamond is rich in lore, ghostly or otherwise, caused by the active imaginations of the resident kids. Great place to camp out- if you dare!

ok , I'll share, A young woman, in her late twenties, died if our house.

One day I got home from work, alone, and I started hearing soft, but unexplained,
voices. I looked around but saw no one. I was done early from work that day took a nap
so I thought it was just a dream. A very soft and "sensitive" voice started talking.
I can't say what was said here.

The rest of the story violates BYC rules of conduct so I'm going to shut up. Let me
tell you, ghosts really do exist.

I've had a couple of things that stand out to me that I will share.

My Granny lived with us from the time I was born until 4th grade when she went into a nursing home from a stroke. She never knew anyone other than me, and that was a brief instant, from her stroke until her death 2 years later. Of all the family, I was her favorite, and she spoiled me rotten. For many years after her death, I would smell her. A woman I worked with told me Granny was coming to check on me and would stop once she knew I was going to be ok. Once I got a masters degree and got a better job, it never happened again.

In high school, I had a favorite teacher I was fairly close to. She died a few years after I graduated, and I was pretty upset when I found out. After a friend called to tell me, I sat down on my bed. Just as clear as if she were in the room with me, I heard Mrs. Taylor say, "Tate, don't you worry about me, I'm just fine." From that point on, I wasn't the least bit upset. I have no doubt it was Mrs. Taylor letting me know she had moved on to a better place and that she didn't want me to be sad.

Lastly, I was downtown before a Mardi Gras parade and ball with friends. We ate in a restaraunt in an old, historic building. When we started to leave, I went to the bathroom, which is very tiny. As I washed my hands, through the mirror I saw a man also in a tuxedo standing behind me. He was between me and the paper towels, so I turned around and said excuse me so I could get to them. When I did that, he wasn't there. Had he opened the door and left, the door would have hit me. It was very odd. I guess many years ago he had been there before a ball too and was visiting again during that time of the year.

Luckily, I never have felt that any of those were threatening or unhappy spirits or experiences. When I lived in New Orleans, I am convinced our house was haunted. Going up the stairs I always felt a pulling at my neck and back towards my roomate's room. That one always felt very threatening and menacing. I refused to go in his room at night, and only went in once or twice in the daytime. I never found out if anything had happened in the house, but it was a couple hundred years old. To this day when I walk by it I can still feel that presence in the direction of that room of the house.
