She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I don't use the cookie tin heater because it just makes me nervous of fires, but I do use an aquarium heater rated for a 10 gallon tank in my 5 gallon waterer and it works like a charm! Kept it from freezing all last winter.

Turk you stick to the plan . don't overload yourself . good thing your in a warmer climate . that means you have more options than some of us . It would be nice to have laying pullets for sale end of Feb, I would think they would sale . I' m hatch them grow them take them to market . or in my case auction . I should hit auction with several full grown chickens by then .that is except for the ones I hatch from Ravyn all the pullets stay here . and Roos two of each breed . Sundays hatch all but one it hatched on Monday
Beautiful chicks, K... :thumbsup
I would think you'd be warm too. But I guess 6 hours makes a big difference when it's north, huh? I will go outside and try! ;) I so so so wish we all lived close enough to stop in and see each other's eggs and help each other at hatch time and with chicks, etc. I'm sorry to hear that. I'm thinking they were to cold. It's seems to much of a coincidence that they died the first night out. What were your temps last night? Did you have them outside during the day to sorta gradually introduce them to the colder temps? Those chicks are beyond adorable!! I love them! I put an ad on CL for a cockerel and had so many people contact me for females. I sold all my girls I had available. Even had someone offer me $50 for another one but I needed to keep her. I was really surprised how fast they all went. No way!!! That's so sad. :hugs Why do you think they died? Just got too cold? Or dehydrated? My Aunt is a driver for fed ex and she has delivered chicks. I think they are much more strict about packages being on time (I'm sure more $ too). Why do most of us use usps only for live chicks/birds? (I just learned why for eggs, lol).
Same thing about live animals in shipping... USPS is the only carrier with standing procedures in place for transport, insurance, etc...

I'm thinking of winter and frozen water....
You guys saw the black rubber little giant pan I bought, right? I was thinking of getting this aquarium heater to put in It to keep the water from freezing. Any thoughts?

Also, on the chicken chicks website it gave directions for the cookie tin heater. Anyone try that?

do you just like stay on line on the phone . the cookie tin heater looks like a great ideal . you could add another bulb to get it warmer . the one's you buy are expensive . I'll make one a soon as I find a tin . not going to eat that many cookies to get one though . the one problem I see is she made hers for a one gallon waterier as soon as it's low on water my chickens will knock it over. I'll need one big enough for a three gallon easy fill . I would need it only for a few weeks a year. I don't know how well it would work there . your sustained lows are worse than ours .

Ok, awesome. It's only $10 on Amazon and I get free shipping, think I will try it out. Thanks.

Oh ok. Just found out that thanksgiving is at her house this year, I'm going to ask her the details about it. She told me she actually opens the boxes and holds the chicks!! Don't tell!! Lol. So when they are shipped through fed-ex, no insurance. Got it. And Ravyn, I found out that NY has no laws for shipping adult birds besides needing a proper box. I thought for sure ny would be more difficult then that!!

I can't see the heater you're referring to 'cause my computer's acting flaky, again, but I saw something earlier that might interest you even more. I was on Sally's thread, talking to a girl about heated waterers. Go to post #2531 & follow the link. I also saw another deal on the same thread, but can't find it now. It's an electric plate that sits under a pan or bucket; I think Murray McMurray Hatchery sells it, but not sure. If you get on Sally's thread & dig around a bit you'll probably find it, or look on McMurray's web site.

They might have an insurance option, idk on that part, just that USPS is the only one with preset procedures... and the cost of fedex is a bit more, lol...

Hit submit before I was done, lol... a couole states are pretty laid back on the live shipping, but as the shipper you gotta check out the state you are shipping to as well... they can refuse to allow it across state line and then it gets returned, which risks a dead bird... :/

Since we're talking about shipping, I just wanted to update you all that the replacement chicks the seller sent after the last shipping debacle arrived a day late today and all dead

The seller is working with me to find a solution but I just don't think shipping six more chicks is going to work after the result of the last two times.

In happier news, I had a 100% hatch rate on the batch of my own ayam cemani eggs I set! Although only one was one I would consider keeping back as a breeder, and something was wrong with it - it wasn't digesting right - it was literally pooping out pure egg yolk. It passed away

The others are doing well, though. I have one more batch in the incubator and then I'm done hatching for the year, most likely.

My Halloween chicks are looking great! I love the color variety. One is definitely a cockerel and another hasn't developed the telltale comb and wattles yet but the behavior is saying cockerel to me. I hope not, because it looks like it's out of one of my favorite hens' daughters and the colors are looking really nice. We'll see - maybe if it's a cockerel and it's reallt pretty I'll have to keep it. An excuse to get more hens, right?

That is so sad I'm so sorry for your loses .Why don't you have her send you eggs ? sounds like you can hatch them .

Sorry to hear that! Shipping can be so rough on chicks. Glad your other chicks are doing well, though.

so they should be able to do 75 degrees maybe 70 . how about drafts are they able to get completely out of the wind into a place where it stays 70 degrees ? you have had several frost its cold up there keep them warm . think I would go to a 250 watt bulb .

HI chooks I thank you Ravyn thanks you .I need to take progressive pictures . a lot of chicks get ugly as they get older but not these . I have two and four week old chicks and I really like them its like they glow under the heat lamps .
I'd look forward to seeing those pics.

x2! Just don't send em through UPS.

lol Tool is supposed to be on tour this coming year. <3  Of course, I'm trying not to get too excited.  Sarcasm and cruel practical jokes are in their nature, but it was announced. If they do I'll be super stoked.  The Puscifer show a few weeks ago was unspeakably amazing.  Wish I could have seen G&R back in the day, but I was a wee bit too young for that. lol
Yumm!  I'm not hiding, just lurking. ;)  How's it going?

Good luck Megan!  We are playing "guess the mystery condition" with one of our best pullets, right now.  No fun.

@BYC910
  Those chicks are tooooo cute!

Everything is going well. We decided to rescue another dog. So now we have 2 cats, 3 dog, 22 chickens, and 16 eggs in an incubator. Loll!!!! :lau overall everything going well!
