She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Ok, I have all kinds of chicken stories from the weekend.
I've had chickens for 7 years, and have never lost one to a snake until Saturday.

It was a 7 week old pullet, and at first I couldn't figure out what had happened. She was on the coop floor Saturday morning, and it looked like something had grabbed her from the neck up, but there were no feathers flung about, just wet and sticky from the shoulders up, and dry and fluffy from the shoulders down. That's too much to take in on a Saturday morning, and I was confused at first, and then I went "Ohhhhhhhh"... Obviously a snake had tried to eat her, got to the part that was too big to swallow, and regurgitated. I searched online for snake eating chicken, and after seeing pictures my suspicions were confirmed. I've put Snake Away around the coop and am in the process of filling any gaps, holes, or cracks. I figure it will either be back to try and find a smaller one, or wait until it's big enough to eat a pullet. There were 3 cockerels in that coop, too. If it was going to kill one, why not kill one of them?

Has anyone else noticed that when you search anything related to chickens, 95% of the hits are BYC threads?
lol yep!

Sorry about the pullet. I just had to take one out with a shovel last week, b/c it was stealing our eggs daily. It wasn't the least bit afraid of us, so we saw it on the regular. Felt bad about killing it, but when you're only getting one egg a day. . . then you get no eggs a day, that equals a dead snake around here.

I've heard smell based snake repellants don't work. But no experience with it myself, just research. Good luck!

Our chickens won't even hold this still for pics. lol

The 3 Musketeers at 2 weeks 2 days old. I didn't see these guys drink until they were 4 days old, or eat till they were 6 days old...BCM-Red sexlink crosses. Styro (35 eggs) is on Day 14, Brinsea (48 eggs) on Day 5...and dang, I got an ear ache!
Finally. I've been wanting to find out how those 3 are doing. Good to see there behaving like living chicks now

Just took a few new pics of the babies, thought I'd share. I have a pug dog, so luckily I love the "so-ugly-its-cute" look

And little cripple baby still makes it over to the water and food...

She's feathering slower, but I think might be frizzled too.

6000 posts...how did we ever get here? I can't imagine reading them all at once lol but welcome crissycriss, and thanks for hanging in there when we can be idiots sometimes lol.

It's been said it before, but my favorite thing on this thread is how everything can be going fifty different directions, conversations all over the place, but if someone has a "real" question/problem /issue, this place has some of the most knowledgeable folks around! Somebody here usually has an answer and I love that! I barely read many other threads now. Can't keep up if I do lol!

we talk to much I gave up Sunday trying to catch up not going to happen go back to when Amy started the thread One of my first post said this one was going to pass them all. and I bet it does. Anybody a bookie I want to place a bet
Let me just say that I am right...nuff said.

If I knew what you were talking about I'd tell you If you are or not

Haha done! And I know they aren't little uglies, they can't help it lol!

WV those are so cool is the one with the bad leg doing any better at all.

Not really. But she's still eating and drinking well, so I'm going to let her see if she can make use of the leg or not. I tried splints, band aids, sling chairs... She got out of everything. She is strong, I give her that!

So....is it normal to not seeing veining on Day 13 but the chick is still moving inside? Or does that mean the baby is slowly dying?    :hit

Hmmm I would expect to see some veins. The one that I had that quit, the veins started slowly floating toward each other and ended up blood ringing together. I hope that's not the case for you. What color egg? Could you see them before now?

If the chick is moving inside don't freak out as things develop fluids darken in some eggs but not as much as others if the shell is thicker or a darker color . In my BCMs I never see veins or only at the very end when the air cell is well developed and I candle from the top I can see them then. but not well

So the chicks that I rescued, are out of quarantine!!!! They look all wet because I just gave them a bath. They were filthy from their quarantine pen I had to something. Clean Chickies!!! Here is Vulture Face. Poor girl has a terrible name. Has anyone ever had a rooster nesting????? Zax certainly was today. Getting his nest ready. Nice and Comfortable. Oh crap you caught me!!! LoL!!!! :lau
They look great! I remember when you first posted the pictures of them. So happy that they recovered and are in good health. Doesn't it feel like a real accomplishment when you nurture an animal back to good health!? Zax is awesome looking!! What kind is he?
Okay, let's take a short trip back in time to June 19, 2000.... http://web.archive.org/web/20000619214139/https://www.backyardchickens.com/
Wow! Time flies by!
:smack This is fun! I honestly believe that the Great War will be brought on by FB and Twitter. He's not my baby daddy, he is my child's father!

Hahaha! :gig You're going to be in trouble for that one!!
I just need a few days to get pics. Maybe I will install the fan first too. I use the cups and love them. I think I can get away without them freezing better here in Ut.
What are these ones called? I've never seen them before.
BUT i'm here to get my mind off that garbage and back to basics like homesteading, farming, and seeing living things bring forth their own kind.
Love it! I think this is something that most of us have in common on here.

Love the pics!! I've decided to do polish frizzles next month!! I'm having a hard time finding specific breeders to ship eggs this time of year, so we'll see. I think yours look adorable. Have you decided anything about the little black one with the bad leg?
