Finally getting around to a few pics of Daisy and Molly... They ARE girls, yes??
I don't know how to tell very well even though I keep reading about it. My oldest pair (13 wks) are so obvious because one crows and the other is round puff ball from head to toe. But all my others I'm not sure. Yours both look a little boyish to me because of the tail feathers and the slicked back top hat. Post on the silkie gender thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-and-tips-updated-july-5-12/300#post_15689837
I was going to say something about that too, and agree with you. That's why I said it looked to me like it had died several days ago. I can't see how it was living on that yolk sac...
I've never seen a yoke like that on any eggtopsie I've done. Not that I've done a whole bunch but still. Shouldn't it be more absorbed for the size/development of the chick? And more just yellowish?
Now I'll have to find the post where you said pullet! Lol They both look so much alike, I can mainly only tell them apart by the leg feathers. I'm not even positive which is which in my own pics. Their combs are a bit different, but both have those wattles. And I haven't heard any crowing! Unless it sounds very different from other breeds. They do make a strange noise, but I didn't equate it to a crow. But maybe. What age do they normally crow?
My oldest silkie cockerel crowed at 6 weeks!!! I believe I have quite a few boys at 9 weeks and none have crowed yet. Just my oldest loud mouth. And he sounded like a suffocating animal for a few weeks.
Just finished the tractor for the fellows.

Nice!!!
If it makes you feel any better, Ruby thinks both of ours are ugly :lau
:hit noooo, I didn't say that! I'm gonna find the pics on CL and you tell me what you think! :gig

Well I might have a line on some EEs or OEs to keep Solo company. Should be hatching tomorrow. Problem is they are up in Los Alamos and it takes a couple of hours to get there.

Poor little thing is lonely, and has learned that if she jumps on top of the brooder plate and cheeps at the top of her lungs I'll pick her up. Feather duster and mirror don't help much.

Oh well, if we drive the back way it is a really pretty, and much better then settling for a couple of hatchery Barred Rock or RIRs.

I know what your going through and I only had a solo chick for 24 hrs. Half that time he was in a sleep coma. He knew if he cried loud enough I'd go sit with him. I wish you lived closer, my neighbor has over 2 dozen chicks and he doesn't even want them! The things we do for these animals, right? I hope you enjoy the trip! Drive safe.

When I was a young Kid my Dad hatched all of his Gamefowl eggs under a hen. Everything was single mated ans the eggs were left in the box for the hen to hatch, usually around 15-18 eggs I have seen hens go into the hay loft and set in the middle of the winter. Don

Just my luck she is a he. I'm cockerel cursed. If I pick up a couple day-olds Thursday, they'll probably both be boys, too.

Makes we want to go back to Legbars - almost.
