I swear, I saw a post that asked where the name came from, then when I quoted it it disappeared...
I'm getting old...
I don't know how to tell very well even though I keep reading about it. My oldest pair (13 wks) are so obvious because one crows and the other is round puff ball from head to toe. But all my others I'm not sure. Yours both look a little boyish to me because of the tail feathers and the slicked back top hat. Post on the silkie gender thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-and-tips-updated-july-5-12/300#post_15689837
I've never seen a yoke like that on any eggtopsie I've done. Not that I've done a whole bunch but still. Shouldn't it be more absorbed for the size/development of the chick? And more just yellowish?I was going to say something about that too, and agree with you. That's why I said it looked to me like it had died several days ago. I can't see how it was living on that yolk sac...
My oldest silkie cockerel crowed at 6 weeks!!! I believe I have quite a few boys at 9 weeks and none have crowed yet. Just my oldest loud mouth. And he sounded like a suffocating animal for a few weeks. Now I'll have to find the post where you said pullet! Lol They both look so much alike, I can mainly only tell them apart by the leg feathers. I'm not even positive which is which in my own pics. Their combs are a bit different, but both have those wattles. And I haven't heard any crowing! Unless it sounds very different from other breeds. They do make a strange noise, but I didn't equate it to a crow. But maybe. What age do they normally crow?
Nice!!!Just finished the tractor for the fellows.![]()

If it makes you feel any better, Ruby thinks both of ours are ugly![]()

Sounds like another Sock to mePoor little thing is lonely, and has learned that if he jumps on top of the brooder plate and cheeps at the top of his lungs I'll pick him up.
.
Well I might have a line on some EEs or OEs to keep Solo company. Should be hatching tomorrow. Problem is they are up in Los Alamos and it takes a couple of hours to get there.

Oh well, if we drive the back way it is a really pretty, and much better then settling for a couple of hatchery Barred Rock or RIRs.
