She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Well, don't be too surprised if he suddenly reappears tomorrow.
My run started life as a 12'x6' chainlink dog kennel. Because of the slope I put it on, the end away from the coop is off the ground, supported by cinder blocks. I bought a roll of 1"x2" welded wire to fill the gap, then a 12" apron, attached with cage clips, on top of the ground to discourage diggers. Lastly, I added 1/2" hardware cloth around the platform that the coop rests on, and 2"x4" welded wire across the top of the run, with a plastic tarp over it for shade & rain/snow protection. It ain't exactly pretty, but on uneven ground it was the best design I could come up with w/o a major cash outlay. I could've used chicken wire in places, especially since it's easier to work with on uneven terrain, but I don't trust it...heard too many horror stories about coons ripping right through it. And, believe me when I tell you, you have coon & possum & skunk around, to say nothing of fox; you're just lucky not to have had run-ins with them yet...you will.

No chance of that. He was only a day old. He couldn't survive the cold alone.

Most of the predators are night predators, and they are locked up tight at night. I do want to go around the perimenter next spring (if I last that long) of the coops with buried wire, because it is possible to dig under especially since it's just dirt floor.

My biggest problem is uneven ground too.

This is random, but does anyone in here keep geese? Specifically American Buff? I was sold this female as a pure American Buff, but, I am starting to think that perhaps a Canada goose gander had a liaison with her mother...

That's one thing that I don't believe we have on this thread, is many folks with geese. I don't know if you've posted it on any geese or duck threads, but they would probably help.
I can say she's a beauty though!

Seems like jtn42248 may have some American Buff, but I'm not sure of that. I'm sure he wouldn't mind a PM if you don't get any other help.

Sad day. :hit  My little black chick is GONE! Literally gone! Every time I peeked in the coop she was in a different place with them. Then I went to leave for an appointment and peeked in and she wasn't in the coop. She was in the run beside the coop door, scratching her little heart out. The little yellow one was trying to get under her and crying and she ended up kicking her twice and sending her flying. I looked everywhere for the little black one. Nothing. No body no sign. Needless to say, little Frosty is now in the house with us.  I don't know if it was the right decision, but I am afraid she will meet the same fate as her sibling. Momma, apparently is not the quality mamma that my banty is.

That sucks! Im sorry :(

Predators suck! The fox stopped by for an attempt at breakfast this morning. Ran away before I could grab the gun :( but I will be ready & waiting tomorrow.

Well, two people have confirmed she's a Canada goose cross. Kinda neat, probably not a lot of them in existence. But it does mean she and her sister are most likely sterile.

Too bad you guys aren't closer to me. I've got some culls that need pet only homes.

You've got a teleporter right? If not, you better get on that. We'd be lining up left, right and center.

I've been waiting on my lavender orpingtons to start laying, now I'm hoping they wait till spring, because I know as soon as I crack some open and verify fertility, I'm going to want to hatch some. But I know better than to ask here if I should or not

I'll check for you, free of charge. Send some my way.

Amy, sorry to hear about your chick.

It's killing me to not set these sex link eggs that my CCL is laying - I mean half ayam cemani sex links? Yes please! But I've already got one set for Halloween and my broodies have 37 eggs between them so I really, really don't need to set any of these until spring...

But... but... sex-linked green egger AC crosses!!!

Bunch of enablers in here, lol. I think I've come to the wrong place to be talked out of it

Oh, is that what you were looking for? Well, then...

You need my address for those extra eggs then, riiiight??? :D ;)

Oh, no!! And I was just gonna ask how the Spitz mama was doing... :hugs

1 strike is all I give for broodys... had a broody kick an Ohiki chick and it died... never again will I let her brood...

Stick with the Jap bantam, she sounds good...

Not a goose person, but did live around Canadian geese for a long time... to me it looks like she has faint Canada goose markings if you look right, so sounds plausible to me... and those darker feet and bill... makes sense...

I've been super busy these last two days. My son's bearded dragon became deathly ill. I mean I keep checking her thinking she's going to be dead. I'm not a fan of reptiles at all but I can not stand to see any animal suffer!! I brought her to the vet, day before yesterday (that cost an arm & leg) and she prescribed the whole regimen to get her better. (Injections and force feelings). So to be honest I've been lurking all over reptile threads, every chance I get! I'm determined to get her better! I did get some good pics of my pullet acting like a boy. I'll post tomorrow from the computer. She has the head of a girl and the butt feathers of a boy, so I'm anxious to see your opinions.

A hen flogging is what a hen would do to a cockrel who doesn't mind his p's and q's.  Don't let that bad boy within arms length of you, EVER!  Give him a run for his money, every time he crosses that arm's length boundary.  Hormones are no excuse for bad behavior.

Welcome.  Do tell, what are you collecting?  Looked at the STC 1000?  Fan?   How big will that bator be?   No wonder Sue is not living up to your expectations, with a name like that.  I had a male cat named Sally.  Got beat up by every tom in the neighborhood.  He made up for his lack of a manly name by being an exceptional hunter, and an extremely loving and affectionate cat.

I had a male cat named "Angelina". He was my childhood best friend! I used to dress him up in doll clothes with a hole cut out the back for his tail! He was an exceptional hunter, as well!

This is Grata Barn, Grata for short. I'm still trying to figure out how to pronounce it. # 8 hatched around 3 AM and he's doing fine also. His feet are curling but I put some boots on him so he should be fine. I'll post a pic of him in a second, he won't hold still long enough for me to get a good pic right now.

She is absolutely adorable!

I have another ?: I have some liquid infant vitamin drops (Poly-Vi-Sol), can I put it in the chicks water? If so how much should I use? I figured since I couldn't find any Nutri Drench in a pinch I could substitute with this, I thought it would be better than nothing.

Ravyn already said it...no iron. :)

I'm so happy, in a sense, that none of mine are laying yet. I don't know if I could resist the urge!!

Speaking of eggs...This hard molt may have run its course; 4 of my 6 finally got the memo today.
Maybe they heard me typing about KFC!

Good news!!

No!!! :hit I'm so sorry. That would drive me crazy, not knowing where he went!! If he got cold, then he would just lay down and go to sleep. I found my neighbors chick that way. But thankfully it was right on the path I walk. Otherwise I probably would have never known! That's so horrible! She is not a good mama because she only had 2 to look after!! :hugs

I don't know but she's beautiful. I'm in love with geese but don't have the property or I would definitely have some!

Lol, want them? She's laying an egg a day now and it seems a waste to let them go as eating eggs, I might have to sell some or something :P Perhaps offer them as a prize in one of the Halloween hatch a long contests. Something! It just seems a shame to eat them...
