I finally worked on toes by myself last night, it was nearly as bad as i psyced myself up to be. They hardly even bled at all, and altho they cried, they calmed down quickly and everyone active today im really glad i did it, i think theyll be alot better off. My pics came out like crap idk what i did to create shadow lines :/

Ruby, I'd love to see some pics of your d'uccle babies!!  And I agree on the float test.  Folks need to realize it can prove a chick is alive, but not necessarily prove that its dead too!

These are from about 2 weeks ago. I have to get recent so you guys can tell me girls or boys.

Candled the shipped eggs.. not good. I think I have a few blood rings, a few clear.. no good veining on any of them and they all have loose, wonky-shaped air cells. I don't know what I could have done differently. I let them rest well over 24hrs, I incubated without turning for 2.5 days and then hand turned them. I'm going to recheck them all again in a few days and ditch the blood rings and clears.

There is probably nothing you could have done differently. If there is shipping damage on a cellular level, then nothing will make that egg develop and hatch. We try our hardest but sometimes it's out of our hands! You did good!

My husband said it resembled a grouse as well..
When the eggs are sitting in the turner on an angle like that, I just turn them about 180 degrees.. kind of like spin them, rotating them clockwise.

These are shipped, right? If you're trying to get air cells to reattach then I wouldn't spin them. Just gently tilt them from one side of the cup to the other.

So all movement stopped. So I tapped the air cell and it died!! . I don't know what I did wrong. It also had that same looking black gunk in the shell. I'm so mad!! And Sad!!! And heartbroken. I don't know what to do!!! . I just locked down my only SLP baby. So now I wait again. . It hatches but at this rate I doubt it will.

I'm so sorry!! that's so disappointing!

In my opinion, nothing I've done has made any difference in shipped eggs, the healthy ones make it, the damaged ones don't.

I am trying the radical approach with shipped eggs of putting them right in the incubator and starting to turn.  The Appenzeller Spitzhaubens did fine with this, I'll candle Ravyn's and Frmboy's this weekend.  All have air cell damage, some eggs worse than others.  

Yes! I believe Cynthia, the byc member that is On this thread sometimes, does it exactly this way. She lets them rest and then just treats them like local eggs and gets decent hatches.

Has anyone noticed that chicks with a Broody mama grow at a much slower rate then indoor brooded chicks? I'm sure it's because they are not under a light with nothing but food and water to occupy their time 24/7! But wow, what a difference!

Huh? I've found it's opposite here... broody mama chicks feather out faster and build more muscle mass quicker than indoor brooded chicks...

Size wise it felt like the broodied chicks took forever to get bigger, but it seemed like they feathered in faster. My run was not prepared for chicks as I did not intend to have new chicks

in there and they kept running out in between the squares...lol All I could think is it seemed the inside ones grew faster.

No way!! Really? This is my first experience with broody chicks and they are so tiny! I worry that they are not eating enough. I have them in a big cage with their mom and I have a dish of starter and I made some FF starter and put that in there. I will get some pics today, so you can see how little they are. They are almost two weeks old and look like day old's!

Usually, I only keep broody hens isolated til chicks are a couple days old... once they're steady on their feet, they go outside... they're fenced away from the main flock for a week or 2, then all together...

I'll have to dig to find my pics...

The cage is in my basement/laundry room. But I move it outside in the afternoon, if it's sunny and warm enough. I wanted to move them out with the flock after the first week but the chicks are still so little that I'm worried about moving them. I don't have a seperate outdoor area to put them. Only an indoor one...I'll go get some pics. So do you think I should just put her and the chicks in the run with the others? I could put a screen up and give them a space in the run..?

That's what I do... I just take a piece of fencing and attach it across a good corner piece and leave a dog carrier in there for them to sleep in...
