SHE'S DEAD...thanks BYC for BEING here for me!!!! :-)

I am so sorry for your loss. I just got my first flock this past weekend, and I'm already incredibly attached to my four girls, so I can only imagine how sad it must be.

With that being said, I definitely do not know enough about chicken ailments to have helped you had I seen your post, and it does sound like you did everything you could reasonably do, but if I were you, I would find a local vet's number to call in case something like that ever happens again (God forbid--I hope your chickens lead long and happy lives!). I know I don't know much about the birds, but I also know the number of someone who does.

Kindest wishes.

"We, who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way..." unknown author

This was posted by someone, I looked it up and the author is Irvining Townsend. He wrote a book, a collection of essays about his relationships with animals. It sounds like something I'd really love to have, and probably many others on here would too, if they don't already. I looked it up on Amazon and used copies start at $58.00! For a 176 page paperback! Does anyone know why this is? Does anyone own this book?

I'm sorry, I really am not trying to steal this thread, I just loved that quote and had to know it's source. I am very sorry for the loss of your little chicken. I hope that next time you're able to get the help that you need. And don't give up on us!

Ditto that.
Plus, remember the timing of posts. If theya re made at night, most of us are sleeping.
If you are on the opposite coast, that affects the timing of more people seeing it.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU

I will buy the book, I will do more homework, and I will do my very best to prevent what ever I can, and learn to accept the things that I can not change and that are meant to be.

Blessings to ALL!

First off,

for the loss of your girl. Next,

for your new babies!
I just want to give you an example of how wonderful these folks on here really are.
Last week, I had brought one of my girls into a cage in the garage because she just "wasn't right". About 11 that night, I found blood in her poo and flipped out! My first instinct was coccidiosis, but I ran into the house and posted my question in the Emergencies section. In a very short period of time, I had some responses that confirmed what I had suspected, but I just needed to hear it from someone else(have someone hold my hand, so to speak).
All that to say this, I know that for the most part, people on here will do as much as they can to help if they are able, or just offer support or a kind word. The one thing that unites us all on here is a love of chickens(ours and other peoples).
Again, so sorry for your loss.

Your new chicks are adorable. I 'm so sorry you lost your beloved pet. Getting angry is a stage in greiving...don't feel bad, I think everyone here can understand your frustration. Sorry we weren't able to help a little sooner.

My very first head hen was a RIR named Ruby. She was one tough woman, but died last year from internal laying. We remember them all, their voices, their quirks, the joy they brought us, but then others come along who bring us just as much joy. The life of a hen is often a brief one-their bodies go through so much to produce several eggs each week and interestingly enough, they are actually studied to research ovarian cancer because they are the only animal who experiences spontaneous ovarian tumors. That fact alone may explain why we lose them all too soon.
