Cool thing though is, that raw milk does not spoil.

Precisely. That's what so many people, particularly FDA-types, don't understand about raw milk. The environment and diet of the cows is paramount.

I hate those commercials too, but only 'cause they run them here in WI, America's Dairyland!

No self-respecting Cheesehead is going to let a single slice of Cali cheese pass their lips. Unfortunately, we have quite a lot of confinement dairies too. They have become the norm. My family is lucky to be able to support a grass-based dairy in the area, who make milk the better way.

Trade ya some very fine hatching eggs or fresh lettuce or maple syrup for some of that milk...

I live in a forest, we are very seriously considering Dexter cattle or goats.. One of our only grocery store expenses left is dairy. (Yes I make my own yogurt but out of store bought milk..

Still way better than store bought yogurt..

Maple syrup?!?!?!

It's often a luxury around here. We buy from a dairy in New Holstein (soooo wishing we had a few acres of pasture...) Seriously considering milk goats someday. BUT depending on where in the Northwoods you are, I can give you some raw milk leads

And this is why we need to retain the freedom to form private contracts with other people. You have the ability and resources to make maple syrup, I don't. Maybe I can produce something that you need but can't make yourself. There is no reason we should have to take our products to a middle man or be inspected when a simple barter would do. Face-to-face transactions are the ultimate form of accountability.

Indeed! Honesty and integrity in direct transactions. It is the way it was before we were enslaved by chain stores....

(I remember at the beginning of this recession hearing the news that Starbucks and other chains were closing stores and slowing down their growth. I thought GREAT... Opportunity for the mom and pop shop to come back.)

Another aspect of this hit me this afternoon - if we barter locally, how are the local, state, and federal govt's going to get their piece of the action?

It's happened before:

I think to make a impact is to buy locally when you can and to support the local farmer.

If somebody has lots of apples and no eggs and finds a person with vice versa then they can "give/gift" each other for trade.

I know the laws are different everywhere but I don't see how it is any Gov Agency's business if somebody gives you beef and you give them back equivalent in chicken.

Depends on what you mean by spoil. At the very least it sours. I don't know about you but I don't like sour milk on my cornflakes. Raw milk can get pretty yucky, though. How do I know? Years of experience with milking cows and goats.
