Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

When the chicks hatch you'll find out when she started sitting !

JCH, such a beauty! love the patterned head... so neat to see how much they change in the first week!

as for Peach... it did take her several days to really start sitting seriously... and it was colder in that room when I had the chicks in there... I kept it at 55* so they could handle 40* when I put them out... and then when it dropped to 25*... it was an easier transition...

I did raise the heat back to 62*, so when she does get up to feed, it's pretty chilly, but the eggs stay pretty warm, she's not up long. so I will give her 5 more days. Saturday. if they haven't hatched by then... I will have to do a closer inspection.

Thank you

If you have a bright flashlight, try candling one, it should have a nice size air pocket on the big end, and really dark in there if the chick is developed almost to term. If not, there should be veins at least if its not been long enough. blood rings usually mean what was there, is no longer. Its so very cool to see one moving

Quote: I didn't get Roger until she was a twelve week old pullet. The couple who sold her to me opened the pen full of BR's and BO's and told me to pick out the birds I wanted. Thinking I had something to eat, or she knew a fool when she saw one Roger was first in line to greet me. After her one minute...one chicken beauty pagent she was the first one in my truck. It all went downhill from there.

This is one of 2 from Mabel my BR and Red. Both have a white spot on top of their heads, some black on their legs & white wing tips & tummy/chests. Both are bigger chicks already, and really healthy! Those 2 look like happy meal wind up toys zipping around the brooder full speed

Really hoping for a few pullets out of the babies, I plan to keep my first hatch as part of my "egg flock".

I found another blue egg yesterday, and a (poopy

) green one the day before. I know I am missing eggs, but until I let the Brats outside, I cannot just dig around in the coop. They are getting better about trusting me, and I don't want to ruin that. It has only been a week, and it is cold out. I have no worries about the eggs still being fresh. I do worry that I will never get the stupid coop up higher so that I can get the stray eggs without crawling around on the ground!
Anyhoot, I had 8 eggs from the Biker Chicks the last 2 days, and one from the Brat's Angels. Today I already have 7 from the big gang. We are off to a great start!
I am also going to work on the new run to get the Brat's Angels outside. Snow and all.
Guess what?? I got a washing machine yesterday!!!

I began my chicken journey last April 10th. By the end of April I had moved out of the old house, and into this one. With no washing machine hook-up. I don't drive, my husband is gone 5 days a week () so I had to wash anything that was too gross in the sink or tub (like when the dog peed on the comforter!). Yada yada, I finally demanded that I get a washer hooked up. I even figured out how to get a washing machine here without breaking our backs or the machine! I went to a used appliance store, told him he could HAVE my old washer and dryer as well as the fridge we bought from him 18 months ago. The houses are only 2 miles apart. He delivered my new (ish) washer about an hour later, and viola! I now have an extra large capacity Kenmore washing machine on the main level of the house! BTW, the dryer was already there.
LOL! The guy had the audacity to say that he would move the stove to our new house for $30! Guarantee he made out with the deal we gave him, but he wanted cash for something!

See? She was born to wear a tiara! Just think of her as a good entertainment value.
