I gave both gangs some peaches today. Peach was hand fed in her nest, she was darling, stretched her neck, puffed her face, made juicy eating noises. the big gang dove right in and devoured them, but I did make sure everyone got a fair share. the chicks... they were so unsure. but eventually, one of them pecked at it just hard enough to get a bit, and then it was on! they've had pears, and applesauce... no pie yet. but the next time the grass is visible, I will celebrate with Pie for everyone! we are getting another storm tonight and tomorrow, worse tomorrow... MC, you gettin' hammered? news said PA was def in the heavy zone...
Ugh u guys are getting what we got, hope it passes fast. I will have to try peaches on the babies, bet they will love it!

Eleven from the Biker Chicks, and all four from the Brat's Angels. I wish that Cadbury and Midnight would start laying!! What is taking them so long? Cadbury is officially a hen the end of March, and Midnight in June. I want more blue eggs, darn it!!

That video is AWESOME! Can't get much spookier than that though, a black cat and a barn owl. Superior rodent control!

Are you having any luck selling eggs? Over a dozen a day is really going to add up fast.

I got 8 today, which is pretty good considering. Finally got an egg from the Welsummer, it's been about a week, but the egg was small and cream colored with dark speckles. She's supposed to be my darkest layer!

The plan is now to order some Denagard (I think it is used in Europe) and is a broad spectrum antibiotic labeled for use with chickens. Recommended by the lady I got my Ameraucanas from. She does tons of research and is the one who told me about all the great natural preventatives and supplements, like red pepper flakes, so I trust her judgement.

I have heard of Denagard. I can't remember why I dismissed it. I will have to look at it again.
I had 17 or so dozen eggs in the fridge a few days ago. The guy that put the plumbing in for the washer bought them off me for his customers. Turns out when a friend was asking if I wanted some Peacocks last Fall, he was asking for this guy. He also has some of my eggs incubating. I hope they hatch!!
Anyhoot, I am going to his house next week, and then follow him to a farm where they make their own feed. He said it was 100# bags for the cost of what I pay for 50#. I don't know if that means $12ish or $20ish. Either way is good. I pay $17 for Purina because the feed mill is just as far. Once I get to a feed mill (any direction, about the same distance) the guys are rude (they ignore me) and idiots (they can't answer ingredients, protein, etc.).
So far I know that the feed is 20% protein, and you can bring back their bags.
Okay, a few of you are old enough to answer this. Ready? What is mash? NOT mash/crumble/pellets. I mean back when the coop was a dirt floor, and cleaned every Spring. I THINK it is anything that is just grains thrown together. Nothing done to it. My husband's uncle asked if I feed the chickens mash. My husband started talking, and I never got to ask what he meant. He said he didn't mean what my husband was talking about.

So what was feed before?

And I am making a sign to put out by the road. Any suggestions on what it should say?
"FRESH EGGS

BROWN EGGS
TWO DOLLARS

I only bought letters. While I could use a marker, my writing stinks. I will be lucky to line up the stickers! So, what do you guys/girls think I should put on the sign?

Apparently you have to mail order Denagard, not available in the feed stores. I think is is not approved in the US, because the labeling states that the uses and dosages are for countries outside the US. Probably costs the manufacturers too much to go through the approval precess here.

Mash? Um, we never fed the farm chickens anything but a bit of what was called scratch (cracked corn, millet, groats, etc.). Never heard of mash 40+ years ago and nowadays I've only heard it used to describe pulverized crumbles for chicks. We've been using a rolling pin to crunch up the chick starter so it is small enough for the Serama chicks! Maybe it's a regional thing, like soda/pop/coke or swimsuit/bathing suit.

Don't post the egg price on your sign. Ask for $3 if anyone stops by, and if their eyes bug out, lower it .50 or a buck, or give them a deal if they buy more than a dozen. Remember, you'll probably have to purchase cartons too. Of course I'm coming from an extreme California perspective in an extreme county. There was just an article in the paper about a couple who keep about 1000 hens pastured using electric mesh fencing and tractor coops. They can claim "natural" but very hard to get certified "organic" around here. White, brown, and green/blue eggs, and they have no trouble selling them for $8 per dozen.
ep.gif
Can you believe that? (I had to double check with my hubs to make sure I remembered correctly.) Hahaha! No wonder some of the folks at his work have been offering to pay more than the $3 we ask. Eggs (and everything made with eggs) are going to go up in price here in a few years, when the new law in CA kicks in mandating cage free operations for all egg producers. Supposedly, many producers are planning on relocating. Glad we have taken ourselves out of that loop.

You could say "Fresh Brown Eggs Sold Here" maybe, with some big red arrows for folks who don't easily grasp the obvious.

MC, thank you for sharing the video. that was touching. Owls will prey on cats.. pretty amazing to see them together and enjoying each others company.
Hang in there, the last 2 holdouts will eventually lay. My EE, Bunny was here since august and laid 2 eggs for me that week. nothing since! She finally has started laying again in the last 2 weeks! Now she is hitting almost every day...I was ready to give her up.. just hated to, she is a pretty girl, and very active. I had just talked to someone about taking her, and she started to lay!

Hope that will help, sounds like she is very knowledgeable on chickies.. I wonder if its OK for pigs, going to look it up. My boar, Porky has a swollen hip. I knew he had a problem when we got him, so i put him on medicated feed. He had a puncture wound on his hip, guessing from the way he was kept, ya bad choice.... Noticed today his hip is swelled again. Really concerned for him, so will be calling vets tomorrow. He has turned out to be very sweet and not aggressive at all, so he is my choice for a breeder. I plan to keep him to breed with Roxy, both are Hereford, but i want them to both be strong, and healthy first ..Roxy just snuggles all over him, what a flirt! I have them separated until I know whats going on with Porky.
