Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Apparently you have to mail order Denagard, not available in the feed stores. I think is is not approved in the US, because the labeling states that the uses and dosages are for countries outside the US. Probably costs the manufacturers too much to go through the approval precess here.

Mash? Um, we never fed the farm chickens anything but a bit of what was called scratch (cracked corn, millet, groats, etc.). Never heard of mash 40+ years ago and nowadays I've only heard it used to describe pulverized crumbles for chicks. We've been using a rolling pin to crunch up the chick starter so it is small enough for the Serama chicks! Maybe it's a regional thing, like soda/pop/coke or swimsuit/bathing suit.

Don't post the egg price on your sign. Ask for $3 if anyone stops by, and if their eyes bug out, lower it .50 or a buck, or give them a deal if they buy more than a dozen. Remember, you'll probably have to purchase cartons too. Of course I'm coming from an extreme California perspective in an extreme county. There was just an article in the paper about a couple who keep about 1000 hens pastured using electric mesh fencing and tractor coops. They can claim "natural" but very hard to get certified "organic" around here. White, brown, and green/blue eggs, and they have no trouble selling them for $8 per dozen.

Can you believe that? (I had to double check with my hubs to make sure I remembered correctly.) Hahaha! No wonder some of the folks at his work have been offering to pay more than the $3 we ask. Eggs (and everything made with eggs) are going to go up in price here in a few years, when the new law in CA kicks in mandating cage free operations for all egg producers. Supposedly, many producers are planning on relocating. Glad we have taken ourselves out of that loop.

You could say "Fresh Brown Sold Eggs Here" maybe, with some big red arrows for folks who don't easily grasp the obvious.

I like "Fresh Brown Eggs Here". Leaves open your option to bargain. If you put the price on the sign you can only go down on the price from that figure.

LOVED the Owl and Cat video! that was incredible!

all right... I have the day off... to make a long story short... I was supposed to take old BH to a doc appt in NYC today, made the arrangements 6 months ago, never took it back, so here is the day... and I don't have to go anywhere! good thing, we got about 8" of snow so far, and it's still coming down.

NOW, for the morning's huge news! I'm up, been out to take care of the 2 gangs... and had just sat down with a cup of coffee and Good Morning America... when Peach starts up the alarm! she's making a racket like I haven't heard in weeks and weeks! So, I dash off to the back room. she's up, bokking... and her eggs are PEEPING! all 3 eggs are chirping away! tremendous! I am the most stoked ever! (I missed out on the egg hatching in school, I got strepp throat and was out for a week, of course, that's when the eggs hatched... and by the time I got back to school, all the chicks were already rehomed

she ate and drank, and is back on her eggs. I worried for a minute that the movement and chirping had freaked her out and she might not get back on them... of course... I'm a knucklehead... she maybe was celebrating...? oh man... I am just so happy!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see the chicks! 2 are BRx and one is RIRx

Yay Peach! It's great having those feathered incubators. You don't have to worry if the power goes out.

So glad you had the day off and didn't have to go schlepping into the city. Enjoy!

Quote: Found out that the Denagard is made by an Austrian company and it is specifically labeled for use in swine and chickens only, has a very short withdrawl time (no withdrawl for eggs), and is supposed to be biodegradable, so no worries about building up in the soil. The only downside is that it's not cheap. So far I've found it at Amazon and QC Supply. Someone also said at Jeffers Livestock, but I couldn't find it there.

The Mob seems a bit better today. About 50% good looking poops under the roosts. (There must be a name for someone who studies feces!

Feels like I'm working toward a degree here!)) I took Dawg's advice to stop all treats and feed only layer pellets for a week. Maybe that's helping the diarrhea, but if Monkey is still wheezy, then they will all get Denagard. Oh, and another good thing, I didn't get back to let them out until almost noon, and they still have about half their water left! Very good news! Lately the gallon and a half is completely gone by then. The little piggies polished of almost all the pellets though. Better get out there and give them some more before they go all cannibal on each other!

Update! BR egg #2 is open. it's visible off to the left of Peach. the two halves of the shell are set inside one another...

no sign of a chick, either she's hiding it underneath herself, or she ate it.

Peach doesn't look like the cannibal type! She won't let you peek? No more peeping? If there's no blood or yolky gunk on the inside of the shell, it probably hatched out fine and is basking in the warmth of mommy.

W4W you are so right! the little peep is nestled in the straw to the right of Mama, the little dark spot!

Peach let me have a peek so you all could have a peek too!!!

there is still more peeping and tapping coming from the other eggs... but it's dark now, so i have left her for the night. I'm really dying to go back in... but I know it's the best to just leave her be.
