Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I collected 17 rogue eggs today. :hmm. found my free range work.hens new hiding spot. First had a hen eggnapping, and brooded out 17 chicks. Not sure how many total eggs she napped. Then couldn't find any eggs since they hatched. Found them all today . Floated them since I wasn't sure if they were any good. Only 4 floated! Woohoo! Right now I've got 3 three week olds, and 12 one week olds from one hen, and 7 one week olds from another that I didn't even know was broody lol! Also got one hen broody, and she's got 6 or 7 so far, but she keeps egg napping the duck eggs, which aren't fertile. Silly hen!
ROFL! Nice score! My broody ducks are napping the hen eggs! Huey peeps sound so sad I felt guilty and let her keep the duck eggs. She still hasn't tried to nip, she just cries so pitiful I give in. DH bought us a 3rd bator and Its already full

I got 12 eggs today. 3 from the Brats, and 9 from the Bikers.
The babies are growing fast. They are roosting occasionally. This morning they were making their soft peeping sounds (okay, not so soft. LH are loud!) when all of a sudden they all went crazy. They were out of food. It looked like they had been, but just suddenly decided to let me know it.
I gave them cheesy rice and Pb tonight.
YAY for 12! We had mealie madness tonight! the dashing and crashing around is soo funny, the turkeys had us in tears! They are total clutzes!

W4W so sorry about your BIL.

We have 5 layers now. Not the one I previously thought. She's had many issues and is sadly not much longer for this world. It's her hatch sister, and she was so proud she gloated for the longest time. Of course we still only got 4 eggs, but the day isn't over!

Thanks Kian.

Which chicken is having problems? Anything treatable? My chickens recently went through a bout of worms

which then allowed a respiratory infection to take hold for 2 of the flock. Treated everyone successfully and they are fine now and laying great. Once I figured out what was wrong, it was an easy fix.

Oh unfortunately this girl is beyond treating. She had this really weird thing happen with her vent, not prolapsed, the top part is protruding (looking like an egg is coming out if you just glance at it) and it's closed up around some poop... I've soaked, picked, prodded, soaked some more, injected (yes injected) a little olive oil, put vaseline or coconut oil all over and around. It's not gotten any better, she cries when she poops and I think the only eggs have been first a very soft shell one and then a shelless one and that was last week. Nothing is getting through. She needs to be culled and I have had such a hard time bringing myself to do the job. She's been eating but the decline is obvious. It just breaks my heart that just nothing I've done has helped her. :(

But, she's had a good life until now, and she's enjoying the sunshine so..... :(

this is my current color palette. at the end of April, I will have 13 more EE's laying, hopefully a whole array of green and blue.

Cheeka, what breed is laying the darker brown? What about the speckled ones? Cool.

Time to go check on my knuckleheads. Should be on the roost trying to rip each others head off about now. They will stop when it gets too dark to see. Roger faked going broody the other night. I found her in one of the nest boxes sitting on five eggs after it got dark. Had me fooled. She stayed there all night. Couldn't believe it. Next day I had five poopy eggs and a nest half full of poop. Roger had rejoined the flock. She has been moved back to "meat bird" status.
Thank you, kind sir.
Crazy Roger.

I let a pullet stay overnight in the nest box because she was laying so late in the day and it got too dark for her. Never again! Had to clean the nest box the next morning, but luckily only one poopy egg. The Australorp, who was truly broody last summer, never messed in the nest box. But that's Matilida, who is practically perfect in every way.

Quote: Mine are about a year now, so have graduated to 'hen' status, but I am still excited every day to find eggs. I've had lots of animals over the years that have deposited 'little presents' around the yard (if you know what I mean

). But the eggs are like little gifts and we have a little celebration every day with the daily egg count. It is awesome!

You all realize this is where the 'crazy' comes from in crazy-chicken-lady!

I'm just jealous because I can't have boat loads of babies too.

MC and W4W, those biker chick pics are awesome!! too funny!

well, Blu must have laid yesterday and I missed it bc there are 2 of her eggs in the nest today, along with 3 others...

in that old photo of my eggs, they are wet, so a bit shiny... the dark browns are my RIR eggs, the cream are the BR's and the odd speckled one's are from Blu, her color coat and bloom coat would be funky... so it caused a change in color and the speckles... she's over it now, but I haven't had a chance to make a big basket of eggs to photograph...

pea, my EE's started laying at 26 - 28 weeks. my bantam EE was a bit over 30 weeks...
