Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

It is not looking good on chick adoption #2.... Clarabelle won't let them out of the corner without peeling them. There is one of the roo chicks that goes running to them every time momma goes after them then clucks to them after she pecks them. It is too cute. I think he will probably be my keeper. I am going to watch them today and if she doesn't ease up on them I may put her out and rig up a heat lamp. I am hoping that she is just trying to show who is boss and settles down.
she is. it may take as much as 4 days for them to imprint on Clarabelle. give it time, don't take them away unless she draws blood, which I do not believe she will. when I added the last 4 chicks, she took them immediately, but that first night, she had them squashed in a corner alone... I was tempted to take them out, but decided to wait and see it was fine the next night.

That's what I am hoping. I didn't realize it last night but one of the chicks is a couple of weeks younger and still a little fluffy. I hope it doesn't get picked on. It is hard to watch her but I am trying not to step I'm unless absolutely necessary. I may go ahead and rigup a light so they dont get chillef since it is a wet yucky day. What do you think?

I read somewhere, that they sell fake/porcelan (sp)

eggs, that look like real eggs for that reason....to leave in the nest box so the hens will know where to lay!!

Since y'all do a great job of sexing, what ya think about these. They are supposed to be Dominiques.

I know I have one pullet. I have gotten an egg. Then you got george in the pic too. Those are his girls. Lol

hi mekat, no worries, it's a useful bit of info for this thread too... they do make them, they're on the high end of price comparatively, but they are beautiful... and can be used as home decor when they are no longer needed in the nest...

luv, it would be easier for me if you took a few more pics in smaller groups, that way you have a better chance of getting all still heads, and a larger image. there are 2 I see that are questionable only because it's a tad small even on gallery view and a tad blurry... the rest look like pullets to me. they are lovely

ps, could be my eyes... i have disgraceful vision, need new specs... have better days than others sightwise, but often I have to ask someone else if a pic I have taken is clear, cuz I can't tell

Chick adoption #2 is not going well at all! Clarabelle keeps pecking the new chicks and they are huddled in the corner. She drew blood on the smallest one's behind. Right now I have them in a dog crate inside the partitioned part of the coop. We had to do a little more rearranging, but I think we have it worked out.... Maybe we can let everyone settle in and get to know each other through the wire and then combine in a few days. I still have to figure out how to rig up a light down there since we don't have power....

I was really hoping that this would have gone MUCH SMOOTHER!

Cheeka, thank you for chatting with me this morning throughout the chaos! Clarabelle was being BRUTAL!

Luv: I am only seeing one MAYBE two that are even questionable.... I would guess that if you are getting eggs from at least one, then they would have more prominent combs if they were roos... just my opinion.

Hiya Luv! Can't see them all, but they look like pullets to me. Since they are cuckoo, I don't know if the "more white on the males" holds true like in the BRs. Were they supposed to be sexed or straight run?

Since they are at or very near POL, I think you would notice a cockerel amongst them. Even though the rose combs are not as obvious, he would still stand out by having a larger red comb and wattles and probably saddle feathers too. Nobody I can see is standing like a roo or has a roosterish tail. The girl with the reddest face is probably your layer, and looks like a couple more are close to starting.

They seem like a happy bunch and George is really digging the attention! Haven't had this breed before. Are they quieter than the BRs?
