Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

there's nothing more aggravating than playing ring around the rosy with a chicken who doesn't want to go home...

I'm not awake enough anymore to fire the laptop back up, so those pics will have to wait til tomorrow, but I did transfer one pic to the desktop, wanted to use it for my background picture... it's yesterday morning, seconds before sunrise.

Well it looks like we are being visited by the stomach bug. My 7yr old was sick 2 days ago. I was up all night with the 3yr old. Hubby went to work at 6 and was back home at 7:30...... I am really hoping that I don't get it.
oh nooo~ Vitamin C lots of hot tea

so... i am stuck at the ER in the city. been here for 4 hours so far. friend complained of chest pain, and at age 55 and not in the greatest health - lots of precursers for heart disease... i made him go. looks like he will be fine but he def has some abnormalities that need attention. i didnt even get to eat dinner yet.

you have a good heart! take care of that growling tummy!

Wow whoops that's great!!!! Keep the construction skills growing!!!! I actually asked (and got) my own cordless screwdriver for Christmas so I didn't have to worry about using DH work stuff.

I'll get to test out my skills tomorrow as we finally get to pick up the chicken run. It's just a dog kennel so won't be too much work. I should be able to get it up and reinforced myself.... We'll see!!

And not a moment to soon. As we had two escapes today. Phyllis jumped out but we were able to catch her and pop her right back in. It was one of the EE that have us a run for our money. She flew right out while I was changing water and food. And of course we were on our way to a family dinner! I really thought I'd have to leave her out and try to find we're shed roost. But thankfully we were able to herd her into a crate where I could grab her!
Hate the mad dash when they play keep away! I have a few named the "wild bunch"
They roost on the top of the egg coop, not in. Mostly roosters, and 2 hens.
I gave up months ago, they are just that, wild birds.
Its funny, the roosters are huge and healthy, i give them a few handfuls of food a day, but they mostly feed themselves.
They are EE and a few mixed birds. the hens are GLWs.
I don't clip wings and they can get on the house roof pretty easy! Its odd that just those few birds won't go in the coop.

roaster may be a better choice of words lol!
feel better, soon!

So, I have no woodworking skills. At all. I want to build a coop, but I am not even sure how you join two pieces of plywood together in a corner. Anyway, I was so proud of myself that yesterday I had made a sliding pop door for my girls, and today, I made them a new roost (version 4, they broke the others. I am not good at this stuff) This version was a dowel with those cups on either end attached to the wall, with one of the cups slotted so it's removable. I had cut it to size using a circular saw (eeeeek - power tools!) and everything. Well, ummm, after I installed it, I realized a little problem. It can spin in the socket. . .

It's getting dark, and Hecate is in there, balancing on it, bawking cusswords at me. Tomorrow I will go take it out and put a couple of screws in the side of the end that fits in the slotted socket so it can't spin, unless I think of a better solution. I don't want to glue it in place because I want it removable and cleanable.

Bet I never get an egg from that roost wrecker.
LOL just think it out and draw it.. the more you do, you will get the hang of it.
I have had some total flops. OK, A LOT LOL! but theres always tomorrow.
Bummer Lindz. Hope you all feel better soon. Those kid germs are murder.

Cheeka, so glad your friend has a chance to get healthy. The memory of one night in the hospital will be very motivational.

We drove down and did a bit of exploring around the Marin headlands (where the Golden Gate bridge lands after leaving San Francisco). Beautiful warm, clear and sunny day. We visited some sick sea lions at the Marine Mammal Center and poked around in some old WWII battery ruins. There is also a missile silo that has been reactivated for display purposes. Built in the 50's and decommissioned in 1974. There were tons of missile sites all over the Bay Area, but this is the only one that is partially working.

Have to go check on the girls. Got one egg early this morning and hoping there will be more. Family coming over for dinner tonight too so I have a little extra work to get done.

Roger, you are far too cynical for one of your tender years. Speaking of tender, are you still on the meat bird list?
Wow interesting day! I really enjoy learning local history, always something new to explore.
Well. .... I am not immune. I got sick around Yuri nd lunchtime.

I went out to let the chickens out this morning and one of the comets proceeded to squat and lay her egg on the go out in the run. I was like "what the crud?" Then I went out to feed tonight and there was another one laying just outside the run door.......I am not impressed with the egg hunt girls. Go back to the nest boxes!
hope u get better soon. Odd they are randomly dropping eggs!
got a great update call from the hospital - he was going to be released within the hour, no sense in heading out... he'd be stuck waiting for me in the lobby when all he would want to do would be leave, go home and take a shower... so I got to let the flock out after all!

now he's home, and he's got a "bundle blockage" which is fairly common (in elderly...which he's not) and is caused basically by heart disease. so he must quit smoking and go on a low fat, low sodium diet... which I've gently nagged him about for the length of our friendship (about 8 years...) but because I'm not a doctor... he wouldn't listen. so he called and said I was allowed to say "I told you so". but I didn't. I told him I would go for walks with him for the exercise he needs...

the flock had a great time, I have to get the pics out of the camera... but all 51 birds were out and did some mingling, some sparring, some mating... the Fosters were a bit difficult to put away, but all in all, it was great!

when I went out to open the doors, I got a potentially scary surprise - bantam RIR Rhody had dug his way into the Fosters pen. he was up on their roost and fine, but he's got a pinched up boo-boo comb. they could have killed him... so I'm feeling as lucky as he is.

3 Eggs today, EE Veronica, Blu and one of the Marans.
wow that was lucky. walking will do him a world of good for sure..
Both you, Lindz and cheeka need a day of rest!!!

My girls got their first leftovers today. An omelet! They weren't sure what to make of it.
Haha love those first looks.. what is it, RUN no wait taste it...lol

Great pictures Cheeka! Nice to see your grass is still green in spite of the cold and recent snow! (Or were those old pictures?) I hope your friend continues to feel better (and less cranky). Feel better too, Lindz. Stomach bugs are the worst

Have patience Whoops, those building skills will come with LOTS of practice. Get yourself some basic tools (screwdrivers, hammer, pliers, and some wrenches), and if you can get one of those all in one kits that has the drill, saw, and something else. Then, practice!!! It has taken me many years to be able to do all that I can do myself, but the satisfaction is worth it!! W4W, you live in such a beautiful area to explore! We may need some pictures so we can appreciate it too! Roger, Roger, Roger. be careful, you might be getting close to eating age. Too much longer and you become too tough to eat! Then what will happen to you??

Well, since I lost one of my CL's, I found it necessary to put up a dozen eggs to hatch, mostly blue. Some will be Ameraucana's, and some will be CL/AM mixes. I think that makes them EE's, then a few that I don't know what they will be. I had to do a dozen, because with my luck, they may all be boys!! Hatch date should be around the 16th of January. I will candle them in a couple of days to check their progress. I have been getting between 6-12 eggs a day from 12 known layers with another 6-8 approaching POL. And I found a farmstand that will pay me $3/dz for my eggs. But he wants 16 dozen a week. I have to go crack the whip for these slackers!

Beautiful pics!

It's raining today so unfortunately no putting the chicken run together! Guess I'll watch football and take a nap!!!

Shew, I am finally feeling a bit better. Everyone else is doing good too!

I have a new layer!!!!! Not sure if it is Bonnie, or if one of the Candy bar girls has started back. The egg is BLUE!!!! WOO HOO!!!!! Already today I have gotten 6 G.comet eggs, 1 green EE egg and 1 blue egg! I am hoping for at least one more egg before night, but probably won't get it.

Ratchet is finally settling in and isn't that timid anymore. I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.... he is definitely all puppy! He chews on everything... fingers, toes, ears, toys, clothes, books, Christmas tree, trash.... and I could go on! Luckily, he is doing really well with the house breaking! He has only had a couple of accidents when the kids were supposed to be watching him and weren't! I also dug out our dog crate, and he has started going in it during the night. So far, no pottying in the crate, and I have been getting up twice during the night and taking him out. He isn't sure what to do with the chickens... he wants to chase them, but I have corrected him. Rogue challenged him this morning and he ran off... I hope that isn't going to be an issue. Is it bad that I kinda hope that Rogue flogs him while he is still little, so that maybe he will have some respect for the chickens? LOL....
