Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Rooster behavior is an interesting thing...I do think they are largely misunderstood, poor guys. Not all chickens advertise their eggs...some will sing for others (like roger) hens, mine at least, seems very interested when other hens lay and will make alot of noise for them (while the hen in the box snatches the curtain closed and says shhhhhhhhh! Will ya!) As for food? I've never experimented with it, or water, my piggie layers always have it...even if the dry feeder gets low they will stamp their feet on the poarch....in addition to the ff. It would probably takes a few days to notice a decline in egg production because the next egg is already formed and moving right along behind the layed one...I would expect to see a smaller size if food and water went missing. Chickens, hens esp need their water, lots of it. 24 hours without it and you may see a bump in production. Longer than that and they may lay for another day or three then stop producing. Chickens exhale alot of moisture...like dog panting.

Roosters.....we must be kind to the poor testosterone ridden feathered friends. I don't know your rooster, but what I've observed in mine....the rooster will stand guard over the hen while she is inside, laying. I really think the egg song is nature calling the rooster to come and protect the hen as she is ready to leave the nest and return to the flock. He is geared up now and ready to escort her back. He is always thereto protect the flock, esp the home turf. Question is, does he see you as friend, or potential foe. When he is excited, all he may see is red. We're smarter than them, maybe. If you have roosters spend some time observing their behavior and subtle clues in body language that all tell you what kind of mood he's in. If i saw a bull in a pasture shaking his head and pawing the ground...i wouldn't enter the pasture right now. Same with Mr roo. To concede and not push him doesn't indicate weakness on your flock status....you just know better. They respond greatly to voice..use your voice to snap him out of it. Her Mr roos! What do you think you are doing? He may actually shake his head and focus his eye on your face. Er, uh, nothing! Thought you were a rabid coons there for a minute! Sorry! Now where did my hen go? His behavior will not change, you may chase him, kick him beat him, you may win this time, but if you have a real rooster he is thinking....but illl get you next time. Next threat, next attack. My chckens see me as their Shepard, their feeder and protector, no reason to attack me. I walk carefully around them and notice their behavior...where is their head at? If something is going on, I'm the one that needs to adjust. I don't expect to crush his spirit to suit my perception as a lack of respect. I don't think you can alter them anyway, you just have to adapt to them. Use your voice....alot of people don't.

Cheeka-i loved the beauty pageant this am...they are looking more distinct now huh, soon youll have no trouble telling then apart...Count me in OK if we ever decide to boycott good old byc, you know, to be honest, I had on occasion followed bees threads, but gave it up because of content. Sometimes getting pretty rude crude and nasty for my taste and the knowledge gleaned not worth it. Personally the old timers i know are very polite, knowledge and not off color. Now I've worked in some inner city er and not much can shock and bug me.....its just not expected on a site like this....besides I'm not getting paid. Forage about...lots of good info around (hoop coops are centuries old) . However, a bit odd to have a moderator jump on in here...just goes to show, you put it out there on the internet its out there all our silly nonsense are other people really reading it? Haha. I thought we were the only ones! Hahahah....spooky!

Hahahah! I was going to say basically the same thing. Get a lot of info out of some threads, but when it gets mean spirited I move on. And yes, spooky about the moderator's timing.

Guess they're just doing their job. I am always aware that this as a public forum, but I am probably the only person I know who is not on Facebook, so I really hope we can all stay here on BYC. (Don't leave jchny!!!)

Yes, he stayed home sick today (just a little under the weather) and has been out to check for eggs several times already. Looking for another blue one!

LOL Thanks ACW, I was really upset and disappointed over it. I cooled off and had some PM's over this thing. Flagged that when i saw it... I guess since I don't understand what that issue was, i shouldn't elaborate on it anymore.

I was able to find similar info on 2 other websites, I just really enjoyed Bee's tutorial and pictures, and now its gone. I normally stay far away from those topics... sports, religion, politics...Lesson learned, copy and paste to a word doc...I can't leave, would miss all you guys way too much.

W4W well said, ugh... I don't go near "predator control "posts now either, they really get nasty.

The thread that jchny2000 had concern about has been deleted. I didn't get to read any of it. I suppose I react fast when I hear that God is getting kicked out of yet another location. I drew the conclusion without getting the facts. I did however type "religion" in the search box to see what topics would pop up. I must say that BYC does permit some religion discussion. In fact there is a lot of it. I even found a thread on gun control and that is a very controversial topic right now. I understand why BYC "strongly discourage religious and political topics". This site was set up for folks who are interested in chickens. Not political and religious discussion. That's what I want from this site. However if I chose to say "God Bless America" or "Thank God I got six eggs today "I think it is wrong to censor that. God has blessed me and I will pray for the non believers, and overlook their comments stating their point of view that differs from mine. BYC should not cater to any point of view regarding religion no more than they cater to PETA's point of view and their members who are offended in "meat birds discussions". Someone will have to point out to me if I am mistaken. For now I don't see a zero tolerance regarding God. I can appreciate BYC for keeping the ship headed in the right direction. Lets talk chickens. Actually I took a buck. Saturday was a terrible day to hunt deer. Time was running out Sunday so had to take what I could get. Hanging them is preferred but the weather has to cooperate. The general rule is below 50 degrees you can hang them. Above 50 degrees and you need to skin and quarter them up and get them cooled down. It was almost 60 degrees here yesterday so I skinned and quartered it and have it in a old refrigerator that I use for this purpose. I will bone out the meat and let you know on the pounds. I already gave my hunting buddy a backstrap for helping so I don't have it all.

Including bones will give me an idea of how much. When we had a steer butchered, we still paid for those bones! A deer got hit on the road in front of our house once, and I went to put it in a wheelbarrow to take up on the hill for the vultures. It was way too heavy for me to do alone, had to get help. How much does a buck weigh before butchering?

(Just trying to calculate how much Roger is going to get!!!)
