Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Best egg day so far...grand total of 17!
Getting closer to a "perfect day". I figure that I have at least 30 layers, maybe 31 after Dozer got Chimi and Half-Pint (my "I think its a roo"). We go through 8-12 eggs a day during the week, and 2 doz on Sunday, and 6-8 on Saturday when daughter is home from college making cookies. Its definitly time for them to gear up before they slow down!! ;o)

I know, Sally, it's hard not to get paranoid sometimes. Penelope's eye is about the same. Not worse is good in my book, and I wanted to wait to see if the Denagard was having any effect, but thinking now it may be a minor infection. Trying to locate boric acid eyewash (for people) which is mildly antiseptic but the local drugstore doesn't carry it any more because headquarters has listed it as questionably dangerous.

So I'll have to make the trip over to Walmart (we don't have one in our town) to see what they have. It will be cheaper there anyway. The feed store wanted $25 for a small bottle of Vetercin opthalmic solution, which is about the same thing.

Was the pale comb on an older laying bird? I know mine will get pale when they lay, or are scared, or cold, but better to be safe than sorry on your part. Still could be showing a sickness or mites. I hate mites.

Makes me all itchy just thinking about them, and now I am checking everyone a lot more regularly and spraying coop with Poultry Protector.

I returned my girl to the flock...she looked fine...I think I really was paranoid. I put some corid...I have yet to deal with mites

and it scares the heck out of me...because I feel like it is inevitable.

I like it... I just picked up this:

it's the "desert sand" finish, should look nice. the kitchen is finished except for the counters... and those are kind of funny... I have one nice white corian counter, where the sink is. the rest of the counters (3) are either royal blue or bright jailhouse orange. back in 2005, we had family coming from Europe and I hated those counters. so I went to the hardware store and bought wood grain shelf paper and stuck it on. believe it or not, it looked quite nice, and it took a beating and lasted for years. it's still on there, looks ratty, but better than what's hidden underneath! so this will be nice. I don't know if I will redo the white counter. the plan is the 3 others, and a fourth is butcher block - which I love...

the dining room is almost finished! the floor is finished, all that's left is to paint 2 closet doors and 1 ceiling fan - once I get the furniture back in place, I will take some pics

Cheeka, I just saw that stuff at home depot...I almost bought it for the chicken coop poop board. I was standing there thinking about rhino liner or that rubber spray on liner to make it easier to clean and I saw that, but it says not to use it on floors etc. I am still debating what to line the floor with and the poop board. Hubby wants to spray it down with truck bed liner (rhino etc) but the brand he wanted to use says metal only. So then I saw this rubber dip stuff that I liked ...who knows what we will end up with. Today we have a day with no kids (my sister is in town and took them with her to a playdate) and we planned to work on the coop and garden together. Its pouring rain and we don't know what to do with ourselves. We will end up at home depot lol.

Free Range today was fun. lil OEGB, aka Brutus, can range with the big boys no problem! in fact, he gets along great with Royce and Carl... but the time came to put the big boys away and give the rest of the flock some time. I decided to leave Brutus out and watch. nothing happened. he ranged peacefully all day. Max avoided him early on, then went about life as normal. phew. I'll take it one day at a time with him... we didn't get rain until just before dark, so it was a full afternoon out for the gang. the little boys still try to mount the big girls, but honestly, they do quite a good job of keeping track of everyone. I love their tiny crowing.

Peachy's chicks are getting noticeably bigger, lots of feathered feet running around! one of the Marans has a neat little tufty crest developing. I will take pictures of them tomorrow - up close and detailed...

Mylee was terrific all day, no grumpy troll....! we played hide and seek outside in the rain, she's too easy to find, she carries a flashlight, which also makes it really easy for her to find me! I had a couple of good hiding spots, but my red t shirt gave me away every time... aw Nuts! then she cracked all the eggs for supper and taste tested all the ingredients for our homemade chocolate cookie dessert. she claims to like bakers chocolate, but she wouldn't take a second taste... her bitter face is pretty cute, but alas, the camera battery was charging...

10 Eggs today! Blu is fully feathered finally, hope she returns to laying soon, it's been at least 10 days since her last egg... the rest of the molting ladies have lots of new feathers or sprouts of pins... except for Isis and Betty, they are so ratty looking, Betty was filling in from the edges, and she does have 2 new little feathers today... but it's so slow...

Alrighty guys, I have another question! LOL, imagine that!
My chickens are very segregated when they are out free-ranging and roosting, although they share the same coop. I have my 6 black and mottled cochins in one "mini-flock", my 7 Golden Comets in a "mini-flock" , my Buff Cochins Clarabelle and Amelia (which included Doodle and Bertha until the other day's tragedy), and then 2 rogues that are on the outskirts. Since Clarabelle is broody and we lost Doodle and Bertha the other day, Amelia has been lost and wandered around drifting on the edges of the other "mini-flocks". Tonight, when I went to close up the coop and do my head count, I opened the nesting boxes and was surprised to find not one broody hen in the box but two! At this point, I am not sure if Amelia just pushed Clarabelle out of the favorite nesting box to lay her egg and then it got dark so she decided to stay there, or if she decided since she was by her lonesome outside that she would join Clarabelle in Broodyville. Either way, she had pushed Clarabelle out of her nest and was sitting on 5 eggs. There were only 4 there this morning! So.... my question is, IF Amelia is broody can I take some eggs out of the refrigerator that are 6-10 days old (the last 5 days worth are already being set on!) and let them warm back to room temperature before giving them to her? Will they hatch? I have the option to go to my cousins and get some Barred Rock bantam eggs as well, but I would really like to hatch some more Buffs since my flock was cut in half! Have any of you all ever hatched refrigerated eggs with any success?

I will guess and this is a guess but I would say no they won't hatch or your rate will be very low. I get my hatching eggs on Ebay very reasonable and you can get just about any breeds you want. I go with "Buy It Now" or send a message to the seller who has what you want if the seller is not offering a Buy It Now. With a broody I like to get eggs as quick as I can but it usually still takes a week to get them to you. Some are quicker. Ask them when they can ship. But first I would give the new broody a few days to make sure she is really broody. She may have climbed in there to lay a egg. They will do that and you might check the count when your broody gets up to see how many new eggs she has. I gave my last broody (Big Broody) 8 eggs and one afternoon she got up and I found 14 eggs she had been sitting on. 6 not fertile of course because I had no rooster at the time.

I find hatching eggs on craigs list too and keep peoples phone numbers and what kind of eggs they are selling in case I need some eggs they have. If the are selling BR eggs be sure to flag them

BR = menace to society
