Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I recounted today, we have 12 pullets, turned 6 months old Thursday, no eggs???? :confused: Hopefully they will start soon...The 10 hens are about worn out....1 went broody, so I slipped a bunch of eggs under her, DH just shook his head and said...Oh no, here we go again...;)heehee Chirp
 
Final Count......11 out of 12. It Hatched!!

All six Heritage Delaware eggs hatched. Five out of six Heritage Barred Rock eggs hatched. The last egg is missing and was under the broody but will remain a mystery as to what happened to it.

I would like to add. These were eggs purchased from a ebay seller. They were shipped across two states by the US Postal Service. The seller shipped the eggs on Tuesday and the postal service got the eggs to me on Friday. I put four eggs in the incubator and gave the other eight to the broody as soon as I got home. No waiting for eggs to "settle". I never "candled" the eggs and I never opened the incubator. I never caught the broody off of her eggs and I completely ignored her so she could do it her way. No help from me. She didn't need it. Result is 11 out of 12 hatched.
 
I just realized something. My dream was to own and keep six laying hens. No noisey roosters. I built a coop and run. Went to get my six chickens. My selection was to be two Golden Comets, two Buff Orpingtons, and two Barred Rocks. So I came home with eight chickens and my ordeal began. Everything was fine until one of them decided to go broody. Can't waste a good broody.....right? The number went to 12. One died. Back to a much more reasonable number of 11. Less than a dozen. I could justify that. But there were two roosters now. I really need one to fertilize eggs ....right? Decided they could both stay if they would keep their mouth shut. Actually I would be OK if they only crowed one at a time. Yes that will work. But I really needed a coop and run for the broody to raise young. The hatch rate would be so much better. Hated wasting those good eggs. So I doubled the size of my coop and run. "Build it and they will come"...how true. Again a broody needing a opportunity. Plenty of space now....why not?. Only four hatched last time. One died. So at that rate I would have 14. Get rid of the extra roos ect. Did I mention I bought a incubator because I didn't think the broody could cover 12 eggs? I hate to waste stuff. And what if the broody gave up on the eggs? I would have to finish the job. Or she could die and I would need the incubator. And the thrill it would give my grandson watching eggs hatch in a incubator at grandps's house when he came to visit. 12 more hatching eggs arrived. 11 of them hatched. My chicken herd just doubled overnight. 22 chickens and I am scared. My name is OK. And I am powerless over my chicken addiction.

I miss ACW. She was fun and different. She knew her chickens. Her last post was in March. She is listed as a member of BYC for over two years and had over 2400 posted comments. She loved BYC and posting here. Hope to see her pop in here someday. If she don't we may never know what happened to her.

Ah, the dreaded BYC chicken math. There is a thread for folks addicted to incubating. Don't go there... It's full of enablers.

Did you ever figure out the breed snafu with the ebay vendor? I wonder if she got you confused with someone who asked for a 50-50 mix. That person is probably dismayed to find all yellow chicks in their incubator. They don't know what a narrow escape they just had!

As for your excellent hatch, not all hatching eggs are created equal. Good sellers make sure their eggs have a high fertility rate and that they send out the freshest, most recently laid eggs possible. Your first try may have been impacted less by inexperience than by poor or old eggs. Seems like this new breeder does a good job with the eggs, maybe just not so well with the orders.
