Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Chick adoption #2 is not going well at all! Clarabelle keeps pecking the new chicks and they are huddled in the corner. She drew blood on the smallest one's behind. Right now I have them in a dog crate inside the partitioned part of the coop. We had to do a little more rearranging, but I think we have it worked out.... Maybe we can let everyone settle in and get to know each other through the wire and then combine in a few days. I still have to figure out how to rig up a light down there since we don't have power....

I was really hoping that this would have gone MUCH SMOOTHER!

Cheeka, thank you for chatting with me this morning throughout the chaos! Clarabelle was being BRUTAL!

Luv: I am only seeing one MAYBE two that are even questionable.... I would guess that if you are getting eggs from at least one, then they would have more prominent combs if they were roos... just my opinion.

Bummer about Clarabelle. Wish I had some advice, but have never tried adding chicks to a brood. Watch out for that little one that was bleeding. The chicks may go after the wound as well.

Good luck!

Here are the new babies.... The first one is about 2-3 weeks old I am guessing and the other 2 are 4 weeks old. Clarabelle's chicks are 5 weeks old. If you look in the bottom of the pictures you can see my definate roo chick to compare them too.... I am thinking that they are all pullets!

This is the one that she drew blood on.... I didn't have any blue Kote, but I added some blue food coloring to some honey and put on it. We used honey on our horses every time they got cut, so I figured it wouldn't hurt since it is a natural antiseptic.

Since y'all do a great job of sexing, what ya think about these. They are supposed to be Dominiques. I know I have one pullet. I have gotten an egg. Then you got george in the pic too. Those are his girls. Lol
Hiya Luv! Can't see them all, but they look like pullets to me. Since they are cuckoo, I don't know if the "more white on the males" holds true like in the BRs. Were they supposed to be sexed or straight run? Since they are at or very near POL, I think you would notice a cockerel amongst them. Even though the rose combs are not as obvious, he would still stand out by having a larger red comb and wattles and probably saddle feathers too. Nobody I can see is standing like a roo or has a roosterish tail. The girl with the reddest face is probably your layer, and looks like a couple more are close to starting. They seem like a happy bunch and George is really digging the attention! Haven't had this breed before. Are they quieter than the BRs?
Ya they are pretty quiet. I was thinking they might all be pullets. Nobody is attempting to crow. Believe it or not they were straight run. I had one other but it died. A long time ago. These were the ones I rescued from the feed store

Peach was out free ranging when something amiss caught her Eagle eye... all four Cochins were crammed in her nest kennel. she went ballistic! stormed in, pecked them all outta there! she spent the rest of free range tucked in her nest. she growled at me and pancaked so I figured I was in for another broody spell... but she sounded the Egg Song after about 2 hours... left her egg, and was up and about, fussing that her chicks were out of reach. so I moved her and her kennel back into her old pen. there are a lot of birds in there, but they all get along... Sillie was in Mama's nest at dark, Peach and the rest of her babies are on the roof post, and the Cochins are on the mid level... I left Sillie in the nest... no point is ruffling everyone's feathers by barging in...

I also accidentally gave my sweet little Rhody the boot while we were walking - oh I was so sorry! I felt horrible and he made me feel so much worse, he clucked and clucked his protests... got all the boys riled up and on his side... it was cacophonous! and he wouldn't come near me... I had to catch him in his pen, which he normally is cool with, but he was panicked! trying so hard to get away... it was wrenching. by the 3rd time (over a period of 2 hours) that I caught him for a snuggle, he was more back to normal and accepted seeds from my hand... oh the Drama....

7 Eggs here... boy do I miss double digit days.

Cheeka- Glad all is well with Rhody, and that Peach isn't broody again! You miss double digits, and I have been missing eggs period.... I am Happy that the new girls left me 2 this morning!

Mylee called tonight - she's instructed me to follow the rules, and be very careful... so I don't get eaten by a wolf, a fox or a Hi-coty. (

) because if I get eated up they will say they want some more! but I'll be all gone and I won't be her Omi anymore and she needs me to be her Omi, so she's the Boss of the Applesauce and will trick the fox and the wolf and the Hi-coty to never eat her Omi or the Cluck Clucks and they will eat grass! little chatterbox barely took a breath! miss her so.

I'm glad Peach snapped out of it, must have been a momentary lapse from seeing intruders in her personal nest. I did put another nest in the pen, and the Cochins have all investigated it, so they seem to know what it's for and if they didn't learn to stay out of Peachy's nest, they will eventually... Peach will never waste away being broody... I spoil her. hand feed her on the nest, and she always has access to and uses a dust bath in her pen... if I'm not there to hand feed her, food and water are both inches away... being broody at my house earns many special privileges. I did the same for Violet when she had her turn... I still miss that big ole bossy hen.

she says a lot of things differently when she's learning something new, or when she goes too fast... when she would recite the chickens names, she would combine them, Olive followed by Wilma often came out Alma... which would be a good name for a hen... Hi-coty really made me laugh... she was talking while I was typing... I was trying to not miss a word... while changing the I's and me's to you's and such... she sounds younger on the phone, it's so weird.
