Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Woohoo - Hattie laid another one! She even spitefully kicked the fake egg out of the nest, as if to say none of this new layer pullet stuff for her! This one went immediately to a bowl. I am so happy one of them is laying, it's ridiculous.

That school bus picture is an attention getter. Maybe I will have second thoughts about mocking the school closures.

We want puppy pictures!

Hmmmm. . . that doesn't look quite right, to be drooling over puppies. That isn't the intent. We need another smilie that reflects anxious anticipation without gustatory overtones.

So, now, when is my Barred One going to lay?

Once again........ No BR lays with a PIELESS crop.

Can somebody tell me why I found a soft shell egg with a umbilical cord this morning. Laid by one of the outlaws (Rogers Gang) . All but little Roger is over two years old or right at it. Anybody ever hear of this or find one of those. Kinda gross looking. It was a undersize soft shell egg frozen to the poop board and had what looked like a umbilical cord that was about 2-3" long.
Any ideas?

Saw a picture of something like that. The explanation for the cord thing was that it was part of the chalaza, a stringy structure that holds the yolk in the center if the egg. (The structure of the egg is really quite interesting. A lot more going on in there than I ever knew.) The lack of shell could be just a glitch for a hen resuming laying after winter break.

I'm surprised Roger didn't eat it!

So glad to hear that your crippled BO is better. Guess she just needed time to heal.

Quote: Too cold I believe. They like it hot. Roger had the sarcastic "birth control" suggestion. Little jerk.
Hehe, think you are right! We keep the house at 60 so they are probably slowed way down.
I have 2 big totes and 3 little ones chock full, so there's plenty til spring.
Ahhh, so that's the escape artist. She's awfully cute. Glad you found her. I didn't think quail got that tame to let you handle them.
Thank you

If you keep the breeding group small and indoors they get really friendly.
I really mess with them a lot tho, especially since I can't be outside as much.
They are really interesting and the eggs are

She is spoiled rotten tho, my favorite since the day she hatched.
Most of the hens are really friendly, some of my roos are very flighty.
My grow out pen is in the big grow out shed with my younger birds.
Those are terribly flighty, and will peck.

Quote: It was something I had never seen before. Pretty odd looking. Figured you might have a idea what it might be or what caused it. That is interesting. Thanks. The little BO made a almost full recovery except she will not get back up on the roost with the rest of the birds and never has since she got hurt or went lame. Instead she roost every night on the edge of the nest box on the floor with her head inside the box and her butt outside the box (perfect). She still lays and raises cane (very vocal) She is very small for a BO but high in the pecking order so no problems with getting picked on. Gets along great with RK Broody and the now grown and laying chicks, Honestly never thought she would live, let alone walk again but she made it back.
