Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I've been reading her thread. I have a heating pad but it shuts off after about an hour. I could get a ceramic emitter but so far the light has been ok except for the switch breaking. We have a lot of safety precautions in place to make sure it won't fall into the box but it does make me nervous too. I sure don't want to burn the house down! Even if I had a heating pad that would work, once they go in the garage they would need the bulb anyway. I don't think a heating pad would be able to keep up with our temps. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep them in the basement but by the end of march it'll still be getting down into the teens at night. If I manage to keep them in for 3 weeks it'll only be in the lower 20's unless mother nature suddenly decides to turn the furnace on!

We got THREE eggs today!! Spring has sprung. It was a cold one too! We got a flurry of snow, but it wasn't too bad. The girls are cluckin away in their new pen and the crows are above in the trees cawing away.

I love the chickie pictures. AND of course Rawley. This weekend will be spent painting the new pen and maybe throwing in some pine.

Lindz - I found a couple of threads where people have had chicks like ours. Sometimes they say they don't know what breed. One said they were told golden comets. One said they were sex links...although that doesn't make a ton of sense, why are mine all female then? You would think out of 8 hatching at least one would be male right? I also read red stars. I think those are pretty much different names for the same thing?

Lindz, ARRRGGGHHH about the picking. How frustrating!

Per Ming's request, here is the Bitey Kitty

Because all wishes of kitties and Barred Ones must be honored. Trust me, she earned the name.

We are allowed one roo, unless the neighbors complain. The crowing wouldn't bother me, though I don't know about the neighbors. We're trying to be good chicken neighbors right now to sort of get them used to all of this. But, I want that one roo to be be of a certain breed, as I have plots and plans. Astrid is a barnyard mix special I got as a companion for George.

Good morning and Happy Friday. It is supposed to be a beautiful sunny and cold day in Idaho. Si and Rumples are in the coop laying little gifts for me. Penny and Smoke are sitting on stumps preening themselves. Today I am going to make a dust bath for them.

Good morning scrambles! It is sunny and somewhat mild here in NJ. Suppose to get up to 50s. I just washed the kitchen floor (boy am I glad I'm too poor to afford a big house.... tho I guess if I could afford a big house I could afford a housekeeper) and I opened the sliding door in the living room to get a nice cool breeze.

It's been so hard to keep the house clean with the puppy that I finally reached my breaking point. I've got a lot of cleaning to go to make me happy. Tommorow will be cleaning the garage to get rid of all the dust from the chickies. That'll make me happy!

Enjoy everyone!

Boy I could go for some KFC. Little Rodger do you mind running out for me?

Chickenlindz - I always picture myself being rich enough to have a housekeeper if I had a really big house. In my dreams.....

Egg count today - big fat goose egg. Zero eggs were laid today. Freeloaders..

I found an egg shell in the pen. It was Si's egg and the girls ate most of it. Don't know how it got there. It wasn't there last night and Si is in the nest right now.
