Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

You could always just replace the thermostat. It's obvious that the heating element works!!! Check out the STC 1000. That'll be in my next bator build.

Love your story. However, I'm wondering how well your deodorant held up during that time???

I might simply because the incubator is borrowed. It's really old so it is unsurprising that it failed but I don't think I want to sink any money into it...

Still waiting on the part I need from a friend....Hoping to get it tomorrow.

i have a new problem with my chicks have had chickens for 5 years this run. had them for about 6 years in other state then a dog cleaned us out so we never got them in that state again, now we have had them 5 years running, have 18 plus 1 roos in one coop and 38 and 1 roos in other coop, they are not free range and have fence between them, the larger group give 23 to 27 eggs a day, thats ok, but the other coop with the 18 hens we have only got 4 eggs from, we have 2 deleware white ones, 3 delaware blues 2 easter egger, and the rest are black sexlicks all are over a year old, so why don't we get more eggs from this group? we do feed laying pellets,

fairy eggs are so cute!

we didn't have free range again today, which stinks because tomorrow I have to work a double and won't be home til around 6. should be a good scenery photo day tho'... hopefully.
pics in a bit... I got 13 Eggs from the Dome, but lost one to a quick pecker. 5 from Royce's girls and AGAIN lost one to a quick pecker... 4 from the bantams...20 in the basket

You might look into a roll out nest box to save the eggs or serve up the culprits as dumplings.

The first thing to check is light levels--light is the biggest factor for egg laying.
Stress is the second
third would be parasytes
fourth would be nutrition deficiency.

Stress could be from dogs barking, nasty rooster, rats or mice at night.

I would worm them and dust them. Follow instructions for valvazen for worming and use a poultry dust for dusting. I would also give them a good vitamin with electrolytes a two times a week.

Also, make sure they are not hiding eggs on you somewhere.

thanks we did dust them and no signs of rats or mice around or in coop, they only have one place to hind eggs and dh went under coop nothing there, i will try the worming and vitamin.

when I move, I will build a better setup for the layers... maybe I'll get lucky and find a place with a good barn to start with. but eat my hens??? I'd rather lose an egg from time to time

went to our farm feed store and they said sounds like chickens stopped laying right about the time i changed to the 18% protein feed and it may be to much for them so we went back to the 16% protein feed, will see what happens no loss needed feed anyway. we will wait to see if they start back up, i do have 3 that are going, one had no fuzz at 1 week old it was bold, i also have another one that had little feathers i had called mc murray's about them but all they said was they would send 3 free with next order, i already have 50 chickens and don't need to get anymore told the man that and he told me nothing they could do then, i will never get from them again. i even had a coat on it last winter, it was funny to see her get it off, took her 3 mins to do that, the other one is just not friendly with the rest she is worse then a rooster. fights with every one.

Remove her--she is causing stress in the flock.

The lower protein feed is a good idea.

My girls had pie this morning.. pizza pie! We had leftovers that we weren't going to eat. They loved it! Generally I try to give healthier snacks, but every once in a while I treat them. So if one of our eggs tastes like pepperoni...........

Bad hair day?

Girls got some free range time

Ron I gave that same advice to a friend. She has chickens that have bare backs to the point of blood and I saw one BO that is in perfect condition pecking at one of the others. My friend asked what she should do (they have plenty of room, treats etc...). I told her I'd get rid of her if it were me. No room for a bully!
