The '97 El nino rains were very scary. We had a small slide at the back of the house which only left about 8 ft from the corner of the house to the drop off. We hired a neighborhood teen to help shore it up with rocks. Seemed to work because the house is still there.
People down near the beach were not so lucky. To this day, the apartments further back in the pic are condemned and still teetering on the edge. Houses in the foreground are gone, as is a large beach side parking lot and RV park. Washed away. California is shrinking.
