Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I just have to comment that this has been a very amusing thread. I didn't have time to read it all, although it was hard to stop after reading more than 150 posts by you guys! I myself am in waiting for two of my three hens to lay, but my little Rhode Island Red has been laying almost an egg a day for the last week or so. I can't wait for my two Austrolorp girls to take her lead. My son and I made a wonderful fritata last night with our first batch of eggs, and it was DELICIOUS! Thank you all for the great laughs! A Baby Roger OH What Would I Do
Well Let Me Begin To Tell You A Few
For Starters Young Lady If You Decide To Run
I Won't Be Chasing While Your Having Fun
The Scratch You Get Will Be Your Treat
Play Dead If You Want There Is Plenty To Eat
I Know, I Know You Want Some More
Keep The Eggs I'll Go To The Store
So Get Off Your Back With Your Feet In The Air
Your Not Going To Die Because I'm Sooo Unfair
And Scream Like A Peacock If You Feel The Need
You Won't Get Pie....... Just Chicken Feed
Not The Way You Like It, And You Can Act Mad
But You'll Never Know That I'm A Pretty Cool Dad

Now I better get you some freash water and I bet you would like some grass clippings. Here let me mix some bird seed in with that grass. OH...I better give you the rest of that watermelon and here is a few grapes. Tomorrow i'll get you all a pumpkin. OK....but I won't promise but if i get time you can have a pie after while. Now eat your grapes and watermelon.

We've been getting 7 or 8 eggs most of this summer since the girls got into the swing of laying. Then with hot temps and my BA deciding to go broody, the egg count dropped to 5 or 6 for the past few weeks. Couple of times we only got 4 (out of 8 possible).

This is Matilda the Broody.

The Broody's Lament

I sit and sit and sit all day. Never have I felt this way.
The urge I have is very strong. I'll stay in this nest. To leave would feel wrong.
The others are squawking and having fun. They're getting treats out in the run!
But here I sit and here I'll stay. Never have I felt his way.

I dream of little fluffy rears, and cheeping, peeping darling dears.
The other girls will envy me, because I'll have a family!
The few times that I do go out, I hurry, eat, and race about.
The nest is calling, I cannot wait. Speed through a dust bath. I can't be late!
Then back I go. It feels so right. So here I sit, day and night.

The girls come in to lay their eggs and tease me that I've lost my legs.
But I don't mind if they have fun, for I will be the lucky one!
To cuddle and teach my little chicks all the important chicken tricks.
Scratch and peck and chase the bugs, run back to mama for safety and hugs.
Oh that will be a happy day! Never have I felt his way.

But sitting on this empty nest is really putting me to the test.
Today when I went out to eat, I gobbled an apple, so tasty and sweet.
The sun fell warmly on my wings, and I started noticing other things,
Like the pattern of shade under the tree, just one of the beautiful things to see,
Those dogs, the dirt, lovely green plants, the sky, the birds and bees and ants.

This world is truly so wondrous and great. I'm thinking just maybe my family can wait.
I'm young, I need some time to grow, and the people love my eggs, I know,
And so, I guess it would be best, if I stop sitting on that nest.
But I'll go back sometime, someday, especially when I have to lay.

To raise some chicks was worth a try, but for now I think I just want pie!

Well, I can now announce that not only is the BA a non-broody, she has started laying again! .... Sort of..... See that little teeny tiny egg? Smaller than a golf ball! Kind of like she's slowly gearing up for the jumbos.
