Should I COOK her? Need your thoughts.......

I'm with you but then again I didn't get my chickens for just the eggs. I personally would sell her to someone who wants her but again, that is just the softie in me. If I were closer, I'd take her, eggs or not. I have 11 pet chickens, what's one more?

Well if it's " in the pot she goes" why are you asking for input. Seems like you already know the answer. If I lived closer I would take her off your hands. I have happy california chickens, and we would welcome your special needs chicken in our coop.

I have had chickens lay at just shy of 5 months and some laying closert to 10. If I remember, my RIR was closer to 9 or so.

It seems from her behavior that she is laying or about to. Hens will go through the motions before they actually lay because thier hormones or instincts are telling them to.

An internal layer is a hen whose reproductive tract is ...off track. Eggs are being deposited into her addominal cavity instead of the oviduct. You can palpate her abdomen and if it is hard and swollen it is a sign she could be internally laying.

Another softie here, What does it cost to feed 1 chicken, like a dollar a month? And, if she starts laying at an older age, won't she still be producing after the others have stopped?

God may have put Rhodee here to teach you patience, or maybe to provide you with a nice Sunday dinner!
I have only culled one of my chickens- I raised him from a day old chick. He was very mean to people and very rough with the hens- even then I had a hard time killing him.

Thanks for the additional comments! She was in the nest again this morning bright and early and no egg....UGH!

Terrielacy, I felt her stomach and her fluffy powder puff, they both feel soft and squooshie! If she is an "internal layer", what will happen eventually? Will she start laying normal or will she always be that way? What happens to the internal eggs? This condition is new to me.

I will wait her out and see what happens......I think it would be hard to kill a chicken I raised from a cute little fluff ball

Yes! I AGREE!!!

It' so unfair how people give them a time limit.

I mean, how about we give YOU a time limit on something like that(like if you were gonna have a baby or something) and if you don't have that baby by then, we will cook you!!!!

Seriously I don't think it's right. Yes, I'm a softy and proud of it.

I'd rather see a lovely hen given some chances and roaming around eating grass than on a plate, ready to be eaten by an impatient human

(that's my humane opinion)
Give her time! I'm sure YOU wouldn't want to be rushed on something you couldn't help...?

Lets give a big round of applause to people who are patient and let their hens lay their eggs when they can!

I will give her a chance. Every living thing on the planet deserve a chance so Rhodee will have hers as well. I still curious what happens to a hen that is an internal layer? Terrielacy had mentioned she could be one. Do they remain that way forever?
