in a "normal" hatch I candle as little as possible..
right before i first set the eggs into the incubator so i can check the condition of the egg and the shell
on day 7 OR day 10 depending on the type of eggs and color
as they enter lockdown
then i will candle an egg is if it's overdue
however there is a problem with an egg.. I will candle it as often as i need to to TRY to keep from having to punch a hole in it.. if I cant see what i need to know from candling then I will punch a hole into it so I can see exactly what is going on
for newbies and most people who don't hatch very often i recommend my normal way of candling (being as little as possible) since so many things can happen from handling the eggs too often
I think one of the reasons why so many hatches fail is because people mess with them too much.. they HAVE to candle and pick up the eggs every darn day that they end up dropping some.. or introducing nasty bacteria, stressing the embryo from too hot of a light during candling.. and if they have small children the kids seem to think if mommy or daddy can mess with the eggs then they can too. so they play with them or play with the incubator settings.. there's just so many things that CAN go wrong when you mess with eggs on a daily basis... especially the ones which have been in an incubator (which is not a natural environment anyway) from the very beginning
but in the end people do have the right to do what they want with their eggs.. after all it IS their eggs and their chicks.. and I have to respect that even if I disagree with how they do things
Thanks for your reply! Very informative, as usual!
I find myself wanting to candle more than ever because I loved seeing that tiny baby moving around in the egg! (maybe in 2 of the eggs!) when the way it is divided like that normally means it has died.
it is just amazing to get to see such a thing! I also cant wait to find out, and really really hope, that because i've started turning them again- that they will change and become normal looking. But then guess what? I'm all full of variables again- not knowing how far along they are because they came from under those mamas when i picked all of them up about a week ago.. and no idea whats going to happen to them when they already have a "condition". In other words, here we go again just when I thought things were just about over!!
Someone is hammerin in the incubator so I just might have some of those remaining rockers, pip for me today! Lets see what new lessons I am to learn!!
