In harsh winter climes, bigger coop is definitely better....better for the birds and the keeper!
Especially if your run won't be protected from the weather....we have days long blizzards when they all stay inside...Cabin Fever is Real!
My coop was built for 12 birds but only have 7 right now and will probably keep to that number. Coop is 6 by 8 feet. They never spend the daytime in the coop. They love the run. Of course the run is protected from the elements. New roof on it this year and 3 sides covered in clear vinyl. My thinking is like yours. Would rather have too much room than not enough.

My run is not protected as seen here...except for one small 4x8 area under the coop...blizzard days get crowded inside.
