Show me inside and outside of your homemade coops

How many chickens do you have for that?

5 currently, but when I built it I designed it for 4. The most I've ever had is 6, but even 5 give more eggs than the wife and I can use. We give away a lot of eggs to friends and family. My climate is such that my chickens are never confined to the coop due to weather. I free range daily nearly all day so unless we're out of town for a few days they're never really confined to the run, either.

do they seem to have plenty of room? We will have 8 so I'm trying to gauge how big i need.

Yes, but as I said they're never confined to the coop. They're only in there to roost and lay eggs. In retrospect the only thing I would do differently is make the coop 6X6. It would've made some of the wood cuts a bit easier with just a tad less waste.

I really like that you are wanting enough room for your birds.
:thumbsup

I would go with a minimum size of 6x8 for 8 birds. Anything like feed dishes or nest boxes inside the coop shrink it fast.
Go bigger than the minimum, your birds won't mind. ;)

we are about two weeks from being done. we have to finish the painting and put up the wire, then it's move in day!!! the coop and most of the run is reclaimed wood from a fence we took down. And some other random wood we had around too. Some wood is new (don't want to be called out on 'lying) the window are even reused. the entire piece is 7x11. the coop is 7x3. we've got 4 chickens (2 bantams & 2 regular) i really cant wait to post pictures of it completed!!!

In harsh winter climes, bigger coop is definitely better....better for the birds and the keeper!
Especially if your run won't be protected from the weather....we have days long blizzards when they all stay inside...Cabin Fever is Real!
