Show me your poop boards!

Ahhhh... a fellow CADD geek chicken person!

I think I just created an arc, then extruded as a surface, then applied the mesh as a texture... so basically I cheated!
Yes, 25+ years here with CADD, only 5 with chickens.
Not many think like we do, and speak that language.

Ha!! But still, if you can figure out textures and transparency.....it's not cheating, IMO.
Thought surface was actually perforated because of being able to see wall edge thru mesh.

Yep it is convincing. There are actually a few surfaces textures that come with Inventor that have transparency abilities, I think I just used one of those, but I have some custom ones loaded too.

Very nice job @OhZark Biddies. If I were to ever build another coop (ain't happening!) I would do something like that.

Well I gave it a lot of thought over the years, kinda studied what worked and didn’t with coops of friends and families, and on this site... and then when we moved it gave me chance to put theory into practice.

I raised quail 30 years ago and had one of those vertical battery cage units... with the metal poop trays under each pen that pulled out... when I was doing chores back then I always thought that was a much better way than the chicken coop at the time... so that stuck with me...

Anyway you’ll just have to move, and then build a new one!... like that would be easier right!

We bought a piece of prefab kitchen countertop and cut off part of the back end just a bit as it was slightly too deep. It’s slightly angled to the front and sits below their perch.

I cover the poop board with shredded paper (scrap paper, envelopes from junk mail, toilet paper tubes, etc) and then use a plastic drywall scraper to scrape the poop board once a week into a bucket. The bucket gets dumped into my active compost bin and then gets a layer of dried leaves.

The plastic scraper is about 12” long and 4” high with a built in handle. It works just right for scraping things off quickly.

I don't use a poop board.

Somebody else on here had the same concept. I find it very interesting. I have harsh winter weather at times, so I fear such a large opening in the floor pulling in too much cold air. Would work in the summer time though for me. my old coop was raised and had a floor vent that was roughly 2'x4'. Worked really well for bringing cool air in during the warm months.
You don't put any bedding down over the plywood floor then?

Coop also has two south facing windows (2' x 3') that tilt in leaving a 4" air gap at the top plus the open chicken door. Floor opening, windows and chicken door are open 24 x 7 x 52. Coop has no supplemental heat nor supplemental lighting. Coop also has a roof ridge vent. I live in a woods that helps block strong winds.

I have eight Golden Buffs. This is their first winter and are laying 6 to 8 eggs daily. The other night temperatures got down to -14 Fahrenheit and several days at 0. Chicken's continued their 6 to 8 eggs average. During the day they were active in their run pecking and exploring as normal chickens do. One chicken does have a white edge to her comb, I suspect frostbite.

Chickens kicked the floor bedding out faster then I can replace it so I stop.
