Show me your quail pens!!!

Pics
redneck quail chateau, just completed for our "redneck" quail, they insisted on a double-wide, mobile home.

basically 2X3 feet, currently have one male red tux with 4 hens.
nice in that I only had to buy the 1x3 and I needed 3 of them at $1.15/each,
had the coated 1/2" wire and the old cedar shingles someone gave me months ago.
it will come off the wheelbarrow

and I intend to skid it with pressure treated 1x2 so that I can use it as a "quail tractor" in the backyard.

Nice, I was going to congratulate you on your wheelbarrow "instant poo collector and dumper in one" but the skids are great too. Remember to top that open wire on top with some clear plastic so that the wild birds cannot dispense droppings into your food and water causing coccidiosis (or the like) infection. My Vet warned me to "have tops on em and wire under em". Nice little inexpensive doublewide!

ah-ha thanks, I have a piece of glass that may fit, I also intend to trim/brad nail in the sides better than just those staples. backyard is fenced and we have dogs to discourage predators but there is the occassional armadillo wandering the neighborhood, and raccoons are ninjas so always wary of them, and then old mr possum prolly would stop by for dinner if given the chance...

and that would be funny if we just put hinges on one side and made it a double wide dump dumper.

thanks!

added a feeder attached to the outside, will have to secure it from ninjas. and added a dust bath bowl, can take it in and out. and I knew I had been saving those clementine boxes for something- I can place alfalfa in it for them, they eat and/or bed in it- one rewarded my efforts with an egg.
Also ordered the bottle top waterers, which someone on the quail forum recommended. we can hang next to the water bottle.
other suggestions? what do ya'll think about setting it up to hang at night? it is still lightweight enough for me to pick up.

I'm going to use dog crates with hardware cloth over the walls and roof to keep preds out. I may put some over the floor, too, depending on what the floors are like. I haven't seen them yet, though.

As the plan goes right now, I'll put a covered litterbox in each one with some bedding. Do I need a sandbox also? Or should I put sand in the litterbox?

That's cold! You must really be "up-north".

Buttons... I doubt those little guys can take that. They don't give off enough body heat to keep themselves warm.

Cortunix... Mine did fine IN a building down to -25f. I did have a heat lamp over their water to keep it from freezing but I don't think it threw enough heat to help the quail.

I guess I raised them for meat and eggs. If you are interested in Buttons, I would imagine you are after pets/eyecandy. If that is the case, I would give them a "house" with some form of heat. They don't roost to keep their feet warm so extreme cold on wire will probably cost you some birds

Yeah, I would think you should have cover for them. That's too cold for them, they will freeze. You can just keep them all together, I have mine all together and they do just fine.

Butler Bird House is at full capacity at this point.... its 2, 30" x 8' pens under one roof and 2 doors on each side. so far may favorite pen.
