My man fighter has calmed down a bit, When I reach in to pick up his water dish, he jumps up on the roost away from me, instead of trying to destroy me. Progress.

No he definitely wants to kill me if I reach for him or get too close... He is just not as crazy as the one(s) you describe. He is somewhat reasonable.
