Yes sir your very right, he also went back to the same breeder and spent another $3000 before he got enough to be satisfied.
I'll be in the boat of wasting money. From what I've learned though with picking stags and selecting pullets the experience is necessary. Feeding, watering etc..
Still deciding what strains I like and are worth keeping. I like to have the comparison of different birds so you can easily see the different styles, weaknesses, strengths etc..
The idea for me is to keep a few strains that cross well with each other in the first generation. Then keep those families consistent. Seems the most straight forward approach for me anyway.

I know one guy if asked what he has he says these are crossed to high heaven. Been in it forever. His dad then him now his son which is my age

Most look like brown reds

Yeah there's some of the best **** birds chilling in the working man's backyard everyday
Yep. I believe that for sure. When a man isn't driven by money the quality would almost always improve by sheer time spent and patience. Pride would be another big factor too.

Yes sir, and if the truth be known, most gamefowl breeders started with gifted fowl, especially back 20 30 plus years ago you spent your time at a derby and got to know the people, making friends along the way. Then somewhere in this time you were gifted your start and sometimes the best fowl you would ever own.

Awesomeness!

yep mine was a grey cock and hatch hen 22-24 yrs ago. He gifted me the grey first and I cared for him for a while then was gifted the hen. For my first crosses tried and true hatch/grey. I practically lived by that man's house prolly annoyed him too but he always had time to teach.

My first were gifts as well, but the exact opposite.. 3 grey hens and a hatch cock.
