I think need directs selection.  Cows or chickens, each has their own purpose.  There are good Holsteins just as their are good Gamefowl, it really comes down to the individual breeder, and not simply propagators, although for some, there is no distinction.

With the single purpose breeding on one sex only, the unselected sex like in these cases male, are not a major concern when AI is so important with production herds and broodcocks for layers are only in the hatchery where confinement issues are not as problematic as with hens in a production setting for such long periods of time. If my knowledge is correct the brood "cocks" do not live for even a year so pressure is on mating frequency and fertility during that short period of time. My American Dominiques and even horniest games would come across as dead heads in those commercial settings when it comes to fertilizing eggs.

I'd say this is fitting flypen

Yeah he is turning out nice so far.
Well my wife and son just left for vacation. I'm on my own with a whole bunch of birds for the next 9 days. Gotta lot of work to do in the yard, culling, cleaning pens etc.. I'm sure I'll have a much better appreciation for the help she brings over the next few days lol

make sure you tell her that! We women always like to know that what we do is valued. Then again, everyone likes to be appreciated.

You three make me laugh. You've also made me feel a better about having my to cockrels. We wanted one, wound up with 2, and didn't have the heart to get rid of him. This seems to be the guys thread, and like always I end up happily hanging with the boys. I found you looking for info about ducky, and have kept following because I'm bound to learn and laugh.

Oh, what's the difference between a stag and a cockrell?

BTW, I'm really glad y'all are OK. I have to admit I became concerned.

I wouldn't view it as single purpose breeding, but rather another direction in breeding. Just as with gamefowl, there are many attributes that must be selected in unison to make for a "well rounded" animal suited to its need/environment. Different strokes for different folks... I think is is safe to say many in the commercial poultry industry frown upon gamefowl and visa versa. In the end, it is like comparing apples and oranges. But, they all fill a need.

I'll second that Wendy, everyone has been very welcoming and friendly, including Shubin too!

Stag = gamefowl
Cockerel = non gamefowl
Both just young roosters

So, it's been a while since I posted here, butt I haves had to change things up here at the farm. I lost my old grey rooster last summer. So had 2 grey Helens, a roundheadX and a grey pullet without a rooster.. 6 months down the road...

So, this is my cock. Oddly enough he waundered up to my buddies layer hens and claimed them for a little while until he could catch him. Been told Minor Blue. He is a nice little cockerel, not as aggressive as my old grey was. I have this cock over 3 grey hens. Hoping to get some good birds out of them!
