Shubin I understand some of the things you are saying. Under no circumstances can truly "game" fowl be raised under your conditions. Not gonna happen. You already said you can't cull birds! How do u pick the ones to breed? Color, comb type? Anything you don't think is good enough u sell? If that's the case than maybe your way works

Most of shubins birds are not games as I measure them but most of what he gets away with on the female side is better than most here can provide. The measure of game fowl is not done through intersex battles in tight pens.

Please elaborate. Free ranging females u mean? I have plenty of pullets and some hens running loose

I dont cull birds, that is correct. Just because they arent the best on my yard, doesn't make them bad chickens. If anything someone might want the hens for eggs or stags for yard art. What I dont want to keep I sell or give away. I've given a bunch of hens/pullets away to my parents and friends. And free/cheap stags to young guys who are starting new.

I've only had a few instances where I was surprised by poor quality and in most cases they would die on their own (sickness, dog, fight, etc). I did gave away one "bad" rooster to a young guy but he didnt care, living the good life now.

I've gone over my methods for selecting good breeders.

I can admit that I have made mistakes with selection, but I once I find out where the problem is, I wont continue down that path.

His penning facilities.

Have you had the opportunity to see how a larger scale game fowl breeder houses breeding groups of games?
Yes and once they get to that point it's about money. I don't need to put 7 hens in with one cock. Most are chain link dog runs with multiple perches. I know. I let all of my birds out of their pens all the time. On cords, loose while I'm standing there etc.. besides I'm not a large scale gamefowl breeder with no plans to be either.

I day dream about who and what to breed all day. Intuition along with observations and testing.

I think generations down too. not just whats coming up next year.

If anyone with gamefowl can let a full grown cock run around a yard with access to penned birds and doesn't have mangled birds eventually there is a problem. All I'm saying

Those larger scale guys play a big role in how the birds are selected to behave outside the pit. Birds from same people, and even me, would like be as you know your current birds to act. That means there is a component that is related to how they are kept.
