I really like him the problem is that I have a four year old and I'm afraid she will open the pen one day. I always lock them up but you never know, that stag really dislike people.
i have a 5 yr old son and that is a big reason to cull them. My biggest problem is if he has a mean rooster come after him it will scar him for awhile and he won't wanna help with the chickens. If you really want to keep the bird just make sure he's secure in his pen and all should be fine I would think.

Two of my hens had a hatch-a-thon this weekend. They both set in the same box with each other & the chicks all hatched, 13 of them, at the same time. I put them in a brooder pen and they're sharing duties with the baker's dozen. They haven't gotten aggressive at all, except with me when I changed out the water this morning but I suppose I deserved it. Normally, these birds would be at each other's necks for any number of reasons. I never had them isolated, just let them and a few others roam freely with the rooster. I'm almost finished building a new pen that's 16' wide x 28' long, with 16' x 8' as a covered box for setting hens & chicks, so I'll be able to separate them by this weekend if necessary. Currently they are all healthy and doing well. Has anyone else ever dealt with two hens raising a mixed bunch? Did it end well? Any suggestions?

yea that happens from time to time... usually a hen will get kicked off the nest before that they hatch..

But I have had them hatch and usually the more dominant hen will take all the chicks (or most)... but if they are in broodbox together than they cant separate so I am guessing they will share the duties (or fight).

Yesterday, one of the hens was laying on the other one. No fighting. One of them goes in the box at night, but the next morning they are all together again on the ground. No fighting. Perhaps I should be proactive and separate them instead of waiting to see what happens, but it just seems like that will be a volatile situation that could go south in a second. I might have to lure the hens out with crickets, separate the chicks and let the hens decide which one wants to man-up.

yeah... if you can free range and get them out of the box... then they can sort out who gets which chicks and which direction they wnat to go..

But I hate to fix something that aint broken . lol

Some hens will kill wandering chicks. I've had certain hens do fine with her chicks with plenty of other hens and pullets running around. Those few hens are dominant though they make a few noises and the rest clear the way. Let a chick wander into another hens pen while she's sitting on eggs and there's a good chance the chick don't make it back out.

Kind of resembled my Radio, but before the dub.
This is a little more than a week healed
