I agree to an extent. I keep my grass cut down for two reasons. 1 - so I can see every pen in my yard from my deck and 2 - because I only own a regular tractor lawn mower. If I let anything get too outta control it would have to just be let go and eventually turn to forest.
The majority of raccoon pelts are sold to russia. Much of the prices are dependent on how severe their winters are. The past few years they have been mild so the prices are in the tank. I trap for fur sometimes more hobby anymore but with prices what they are don't count on $20 raccoons. I didn't trap at all last year because the fur prices were so bad. $4 raccoons, $8 beaver etc.. the only thing in the lower 48 worth trapping were coyotes and they were lower than normal.
"Clean farming" practices are ruining rabbit, quail and pretty much all small game populations, especially quail.
Everything now is done more for hobby since all the big ag companies control most of the show. I think that's the problem.
Those small farms can't hardly compete so they make use of every available inch of ground. Doesn't leave a whole lot of habitat for small game.

i haven't seen a rabbit around here in about 2 yrs but I have plenty of foxes, red and gray. There are coyotes around but not too many. Raccoons are everywhere. Usually catch around 20 - 30 a year just in my yard.

Not to change the subject, but Centra's post about the broken spur got me thinking. Would trimming the spurs reduce the problem of broken spurs, especially during a pen fight? I have not trimmed spurs as I like the look of natural spurs, but realize that may catch up with me some day. I think it was SDM, a while back, that suggested using a PVC cutter?

Speaking of small game. A couple years ago this guy knocks on my door and asks me if he can shoot the woodchucks in my yard. I look at him like he's nuts! Dumb*ss just wants to kill something. He tells me they're gonna tear up my yard. All the dens are in the woods and they come out in the yard to eat the grass. Idiot doesn't even know what he's talking about. Now on a farm where the dens are in the middle of a field it might be a problem but not in my yard. I told him if
He wants to trap the moles he's more than welcome.

Yes it would almost prevent it 100%. I've never used a pvc cutter but a regular dremel with a cutoff wheel takes em right off and cauterizes instantly.

pvc cutter works but it's like a gotta do it right now thing. It does not leave a real clean cut. Use a dremel or a coping saw if it's planned

Friend came over to pick up a cock and a stag. He walks towards a set of pens and says what's this I say bantam and he makes a hard right to the domes without Missing a beat lol
Give the little guys a chance. lol I sure enjoy these miniature fowl!

Left to my own devices I am happiest running around the woods, drumming, hugging trees and chilling with critters... but whoever vandalized our flag & pole did it for all the reasons I hear from certain types of folks (who call themselves liberal) out here all the time, America sucks, anyone who flies a flag sucks, anyone connected to the military sucks... the flag is a terrorist or hate symbol, and people who do fly a flag need to die because they must be republicans who voted for Trump, so I know who ever did this thinks like that, my immediate close liberal friends do not and my conservative friends do not... when I said "liberal" I mean these sort. So yes Capitol A ass, of course there is a conservative version of this personality type too... I know that. It is just these sort build whole arguments up on one little piece of information like US Military Base Stickers or affiliation bumperstickers and decide they know everything about a complete stranger to justify doing something like vandalizing or leaving threats and violence. I have gotten threats and even had hate crimes committed against my family by certain conservatives in the past. So I know the everyone gots jerks. Nothing like being the first victims of homemade weapons deployed in an attempt to kill or maim my children in the name of Jesus (I know this was not Christian behavior so I do not hold it against all Christians just the people who think attempting to killing and maiming children is a Godly act). So don't get me wrong, I just know the type. Peace and Happy 4th of July!

Here ya go @sdm111
Needs some tweaking but should work for redfish. It's a pretty popular pattern but I didn't have all the materials so I substituted.
