I love game fowl but I know I am not ready for them... yet... nothing wrong with that just more time to learn new things. You got to have separate pens like havoc says and good ones or good cord system... I would start research first how to set up your yard so you birds are safe and pick a breed/ line to really understand well... I got my favorite lines. You can learn a lot on this thread by studying previous posts of about various lines and crosses. But you got to respect these breeds, they are highly intelligent and physically capable birds. They are the thoroughbreds of the chicken world regardless of type/breed, American, English, Spanish, Oriental, Persian and so on. Hot bloods require extra considerations... including being ready to doctor them up. Okay back to my not game fowl corner...

PS
The guys here are great and really will help you learn.

I was directed to this thread earlier when I posted pictures of this rooster asking what he was.
Background. He showed up at our place this spring and didn't bother anyone so we asked around then kept him. He's actually a very nice bird. The only downside is he's skiddish. Very non aggressive. He's fertile and fathered 14 chicks by a Bantam hen.

I'd like more info on game fowl. Ours

seems like he would have quite a story if he could talk. I understand there are different strains. Does he resemble any of them? Are game fowl a good cross for barnyard mixes? Seems like he'd add some street smarts ( vigor and savvy). All 14 of his chicks survived free ranging till I sold them as teenagers. I was shocked some weren't picked off by predators. General thoughts about what I'm getting into with this bird?

nobody but he and his breeder (if they know) knows what he is. It really depends on where he came from. He could have came from a real breeder or he could be the offspring of frivilous mating by someone just looking to make a dollar and the buyer realized he didn't get a real game chicken and dripped him off somewhere. How were his offspring described at sale? And I don't think your "getting" into anything. What do you mean? It reads like your apprehensive possibly from talking with other non game chicken owners or some other negatives. Game chickens can be quite rewarding but I believe they should not be crossed into "regular" chickens. Looks like he's molting and someone put at least a little time in him since he's dubbed

SDM would be correct, thread got a haircut... the original post is still there... confrontational or 'flaming' posts if reported just get removed...

There was no "flaming" or "confrontational" anything. Unless you count my post responding to the op that in fact I didn't have gamefowl but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night. I can't imagine it got cut because of that.
