We supposedly have gray rat snakes as well. But never saw one.

Yes. Used to do a lot of Grouse hunting up there, but never got a chance to trout fish. Never ran into a Rattler though. 6 inches is close! Used to see one now and then at our old camp in Tioga county. But never been that close to one unless it was dead.

Most of my trout fishing has been in the Conewago, Yellow Breaches, Clear Creek, Clarion river and some small streams for Native Brookies in our local state forest around Pine Grove Forest and Caledonia.

Yep. I was being stupid and jumped over some down logs laying across the bank. Couldn't see the other side and there was a coiled up rattler sunning himself. Saw a few more on the hike back out in the morning. All young ones. Wasn't a good trip at all.
There's still plenty of grouse around there. Especially right in the area of young woman's creek.

Caledonia is name for Scotland I thought.

yep it is. Scottish founders perhaps.

It was named after an Iron Furnace owned by Thaddeus Stevens. There was the Caledonia furnace and the Pine Grove Furnace. Not sure why it was named Caledonia. Might be something with the Scottish. This whole area was settled by Scott Irish in the colonial days.

Caledonia was the frontier at one point in the 1700's. Indians used to raid the little villages and farms in our area from the park area.

That coulda been a really bad trip. Man that's scary.

Good to know about the Grouse. The seasons are getting shorter and the birds have been declining. I might plan a trip north this fall. Thanks

I see as many blacks as I do the greys, last year I went out at night to check a broody hen and a black was having a feast on her eggs. I pulled him out and cut his head off with a putty knife that was in arms reach.
