In the coming years I am going to be setting up more effectively to have two yards, each capable of supporting 50 pens. Actual area of each is about 2 acres but a 20 foot swath of perimeter will never see pens sitting on them. One yard will be between house and barn with rows of bamboo to block wind during worst part of winter. Everything is being setup so I can shine light from porch house to see all pens like currently realized. Must not obstruct view of barn. The second yard is to south of that and will be among what is currently a thicket of young oaks to provide shade during the heat of the summer. I have kept pens in the latter a few times but trees too thick to get around in. Also had too much bobcat penetration. Soon some selective culling of trees will be made to to open walkways under the remaining oaks. A pen redesign or sled needs to be designed to facilitate moving pens seasonally back and forth. Distance to move pens is almost 400 feet. Both areas will be defined by high tensile hotwire that will replace the current hotwire. Both arrangements will protect pens from strong winds. Moving pens is a bear. I have only about 40 of the size to be moved and something must me done to make process easier. Birds learn real quick to walk with pen or jump up on roost but process still so slow. I will not be able to shine the summer yard because of all the trees, least at first until I can remove lower branches.
