Helluva lot easier to turn em loose and collect the survivors. All those crazy set ups seem like overkill to me.
To each their own. Grass is better than wire.

This ain't overkill!
Gonna need to double hinge that door. Didn't account for the shaft play.
Just the roof and other door and it's done.

That brooder that shubin posted is pretty cool and looks well made. I’m not knocking the craftsmanship. I just don’t understand why people do that in the first place. I understand not everyone has a big enough yard to let them run and all but birds allowed to run loose are far healthier. It’s been proven and you can clearly see the differences.

The title said it was a brooder, not a permanent-housing-er. If I threw day olds out into the flock they'd be dead in five minutes, lol.

Seems like everyone is so worried about saving every single chick by any means necessary instead of trying to raise them as healthy as possible. Might lose a few but with a little predator management it’s not that bad.
For me it's more providing heat, keeping them away from adult birds, and regulating which food they get. I don't use broodies, which obviously makes a huge difference, lol.

My chicks are usually integrated fully by a month and a half, but boy, would I love to have something like that to get them out of the house sooner.

I’ve had plenty of hens hatch eggs and raise chicks out in the yard. I’ve still got quite a few hens running around that have never been in any kind of pen. Some are over 3 yrs old. The hen with chicks will walk right through the other hens on the yard and drop any that get close to her chicks.

Oh, you use broodies. I hatch in incubators mostly.

When I have a broody that I let hatch I don't separate them at all, unless there's problems such as all my shallow water dishes for the flock are missing.

I use a brooder if some sort too sometimes. They’re not in there long enough to warrant building any special project other than a wooden box.
