I have not tried this. Do you just cut out the web on day olds?
Yeah you can buy an actual notcher but I just use my compound toe punch. I just punch right at the edge of the webbing instead of further back. I’ve never had one that was notched grow back. I usually do it within the first 1-3 days.

I checked four of 30 chicks marked. No hole on any of the four. Area a little translucent is all.
I started toe punching this year and have had to repunch around 40% since the opening healed. It wasn't too difficult as the intial punch left a scar.
I think I will try the notch next year like Havoc.

Gave him this here crazy cricket. Well he took it put it down called his ladie which is in the pen behind him.... the cricket takes off he gets it and starts kicking at it like a mad man. Guess if it moves it's a threat lol.

Probably 30% of my eggs this year have not been fertile and with 3 incubators running full time, plus a few hens, I've not been able to keep up with the amount of eggs laid this year. I found a Brinsea Octagon advance with a automatic water tank for sale, so I'll have 3 of them now.

@flypen,

About a week ago I placed a cock in with about 35 young juveniles where about 1/2 are games to suppress the mutually assured ass kicking they were trying to deliver. Cock got things settled withing 48 hours, would have been quicker if he was added sooner. What has happened since is he went full on broody trying cover whole bunch when they roost in corner of pen. Until 2 days ago he was roosting up by himself on a milk crate. Pen is tight (3' x 4') so likely part of equation.
