Years ago I had raccoons do that to a bunch of layers before I had an electric fence. It happened right about dawn or so. It’s like they go nuts and just kill them all when the birds start panicking. I suppose it could be a fox or a coyote with young teaching to hunt.
How many birds did you lose total?

Well that sucks. Does sound like a dog though. Doubtful a coyote would do that. Too smart to let food lay like that. Raccoons would and while it’s not totally normal they will hunt during the day. I’ve caught quite a few around that time frame.
Thanks for the info. My first thought was a dog or dogs. I was in and out of the house all morning and walked by the window to see a young stag trying to hide in open lawn up by the house. I knew that wasn't good as they don't usually venture up to the house. Most of the older birds were up in the trees spread out over about a 100 yard area around the pens.

Man I don’t know. Sure does sound like a damn dog. Wet bites on em if it was a raccoon you could smell it on them. Dogs slobber.

I found 7 dead and still missing about a dozen quail size chicks. I walked all over and it seems quite now, so I am guessing all the survivors are back. Middle of the day and all the birds are in and up on the roost. I have one cock bird that is missing most of the feathers on his back and all his tail that is just standing there in shock. It was interesting to see his trail of feathers before he made it back into his pen.

Yeah I have thinned down the coons pretty good. I just caught one this morning after several days with nothing. My guess is after the dog was full, it just started killing for fun...

Ain’t too hard to figure out who has dogs near you. Might wanna find out. Can’t put up with that. Won’t have any birds left.

Just about everyone around us has dogs... We have had dogs in the yard, but not any problems for a couple of years. They would get one bird, but nothing like this.

The paw prints in the mud are about 2" wide and maybe 2 1/2" long, so not too big.
