I can assure you it's easier to move pens than it is to clean them as much as I do but as centra said my setup is more permanent. I can move them if I have to though. I go through plenty of straw and DE to keep things as dry as I can. It's almost always a losing battle but I fight the good fight.

The little Grey stag is young still about 4 1/2 months ... The White one is a little older about 7 months. The White one isnt fighting any other stags yet which is why he is out. Here is is with some other stags. They all grew up free ranging together so they have an established pecking order... but that will change very soon..
I figured. I was just curious I have a hard time telling ages of some birds. I had my feather roosters out yesterday. 12 birds out 6 fights at the same time. Many ended up bloody. They are no slouches when it compared to regular breeds. However I thought it was kinda funny to watch one in particular drop three ranks in as many scraps that he started.

Beautiful sunny day

I think allowing some birds to spar like that in a free range setting would be fine. However as I have proof that it's not good practice with even young birds. Wasn't but one kick and I lost a bird. Some kick just a wee bit harder even at relatively young age.

With flypens that are much taller and used for higher value birds, management is very much like with horse stalls although birds are rotated out into pens or tie cords.

Pen movement for me not just about leaving waste behind, it can also be about using birds to manage the plant community. I value greens in the diet as a supplement to grains and other nutrient dense components. Having birds with ability to scratch about helps with moral well.

Had some nice weather for a change so I decided to disassemble some brooders I had and repurpose the wood to make some nest boxes. Spring will be here before I know it
