I bet he gets the crow to perch on his shoulder while cruising to get the chicken feed lol. sdm111 I've been working on a few pens just incase. I still have my dads breeding/ raising cages from when he had birds so I just have to build the single pens up for everything. Btw do you keep your pairs together year-round ? I've seen people keep them together all year but I prefer to keep my cocks in the round pens for easy movability during the fall/winter then keep them paired together for spring and summer.

I've been having predator issues here lately folks. it's been a real battle. they(coons?) can break through 2x4 wire, apparently without too much effort. I lost better than ten birds. I beefed things up by getting 1x2 wire, so far ok. then(Thursday) a neighborhood dog(didn't see it) killed a leghorn hen(freerange).
after the coon attack a bunch of birds will not go back in the coop, and have been roosting in trees, Monday night a leghorn that had been roosting in the rafters in the garage was killed.
so tonight I came home and a hen that was setting is missing, and the eggs(5), I had left the gate and the door open.
where she was setting there is poop, dark, somewhat runny, and what looks like could be cherry pits in it.
no carcass, no blood or feathers. no eggshells
could she have taken her clutch and moved between 5pm and 10?
or did the predator get her and the eggs, take a dump where they were, then carry them off?

I believe, not only are the mfers killing my chickens every chance they get, now they're taunting me as well.

I did see a coon(50 pounder), and three others(20 pounders?) the other day. I will be on watch tonight.

Usually cherry pits mean foxes around here. Also is that 2x4 the same thing as garden wire ? If so I had a pair of foxes rip through some on pens and then get in the pens and take whole pairs and trios. Most likely if they were still eggs then something got her, sorry by the way for all the troubles.

50 lbs would be an absolutely massive raccoon. with birds just missing it sounds more like a fox than a raccoon. Was there a hole dug under the pen or did something break through the 2x4 wire? Not many animals can easily just chew through welded wire without issue.

I have most paired for life, some single males, and 2 grey hens in single pens which are solely Broody hens. But birds come and go too

when i had my Fox problem I did some nite surveillance and found I had not a single Fox issue but a pack of about 6 problem. Luckily they were coming from across the street so I'd wait up between my vehicles and as they came out the woods to cross the street to get to my yard they could be seen by the street lights so I'd take them out one by one with a 20ga. I also put up the elec fence vehicles time and have not had any more problems. I'd say nite hunting or trapping would be your best bet for immediate action

Just for the fun of it I entered some of my birds in our county fair I ended up with a best-of-breed a reserve best-of-breed and three first and two seconds go figure..
The war horse hen was is shown as a Black old English standard.. The others are my Asils and they're only four months old

hi everyone. its been a while. i just moved all my birds to some new property my partner just aquired in paradise , ca. about a half an hour up into the foothills from where i was. so i have a few new questions for you guys. my trio has been producing some nice biddies. the cock is a white leg. kinda looks pearlescent a bit. the hens were yellow and grey legged. so out of twenty biddies i have three hens and one stag with blue legs. it looks like green legs with yellow sheen over the top making them look vibrant blue. also i had a few biddies i left with one of the hens to raise them herself. they werent growing as fast as the others i have seperated from the hens the day after they were born. so i put them with the others and they all did fine except one. i had aa young hen grab herwing with her beak and started trying to spur him as hard and as fast as she could. it inly took three good shots and now the smaller one has a punctured lung and an air pockety building up on his side. he is a blue legged stagg so i was wanting to keep him however the hens dominance and his running from her tells me to cull cull cull. i dont want weak insuffe ient stock around waisting my feed. im just wondering if im doing this correctly. any input about the blue legged fowl would be appreciated. im not sure how, why, or if there will or could be more with blue legs. i think i remember sdm maybe having some blue gamefowl? do the blue gamefowl have blue legs?
