I HATE snakes!!! So some of my hens are free range and lately 2 of my bravest hens were acting like they got in corn mash (aka snot faced drunk) this happened overnight they would flop flip jump twirl, and failed the whole field sobriety test miserably.I was going to ring some necks, sigh. All of a sudden 2 other hens nesting under a shed raised wholly hell, my trusty mutt dog scooted under, and then it turned real ugly, dog came out with the a** end of a 7ft rat snake shaking like mad. The front half of the snake was wrapped around the neck of hen #3!! Had my son hold jenny and I cut the snake off,fed it to the dog. Hope I got to her in time, she is wobbly but can function, she returned to her nest.I guess since I'm in fl swampland its no surprise, been here my whole life, and I HATE snakes. The dog will be on permanent yard duty, no more sleeping on the couch!!Unfortunately the first two are too far gone brain was simply cut off from oxygen too long.Bummer.Good Roundheads. Just wanted to share this if somebody else has a drunk, check for snakes,Thank god they were not sick, but gone is gone.At least I was able to salvage 15eggs from them in the incubator now.
thats a crazy story... Never heard of a rat snake, but they must be monsters if they are reaching 7ft and killing chickens.

Only had one incident of snake eating an egg. Gopher snake.

Lacy Roundhead hen with her new brood. Her head is all scarred up from a fight. She's mean as a snake to other hens, but gentle as a pup to handle even when she has chicks. Good mama. :)

Yup rat snakes I think some folks call em corn snakes they are red to brown and have a checkered belly.Real long and skinny, don't get me wrong I hate rats too if only the snakes would stick with them, they can't eat any bigger than a biddy, but they will strangle a grown chicken.I sure love my dog, he hates everything I do my kids think its funny to sik him on BIG roaches,he'll get them then rub his nose in the dirt and yack,I can't imagine the taste, especially the 'stinkers' when the dog gets a hold of one a those and pops it, well there goes the company. Clear the room.I've got one special dark hen, super tame, and we got her to fire hunt.At night get the hen, flashlight, a good patch of roaches, get her ready and turn on the flashlight, in no time she'll be so full you can feel her crop crawling with them.I started this when she was a baby, healthiest bird on the yard.Good fun on a Friday night. Anyways I'm having a hard time getting pics on here all of a sudden.oh well.

I've never heard of night hunting with chickens... pretty impressive training. Mine tend to run into fences at night and act all goofy.

I used to have an albino corn snake.. I let him loose, because I felt bad for him stuck in a cage. only 3-4ft tho.

Here is the roach hunter, comes in and will steal my kids sandwich in a heart beat. Shubin, fire hunting is easy start with a young tame one go to a garage (daytime but don't turn on other lights) get them to focus on where you shine the light, you can start with a bowl of feed with a couple doodle bugs or any slow bug.I hold the chicken one hand and flashlight in the other keep the light close to the bugs, they'll learn quickly. Just ease them later in the day each time(keep your flashlight on) pretty soon you can grab your hunting buddy any time of night to do some extermination. Main thing is start with a tame chicken,my kids keep that job done for me. I've had friends call me up to bring my hen and clean up under the cabinets. Little boys love it and little girls won't even look at mcnuggets the same.
