Pure Blueface, notice all the chicks have white tips on their feathers.

Do they grow out of those white tips as adults?

That should be fine. The main idea is not to make them too hungry, but get the feed out of them during the middle of the day when it is the hottest. We only did this on the days when it was supposed to be unusually hot and humid. I would guess every area is different and birds are pretty adaptable.

Thanks so much for the advice, I will try this for the summer, the last few summers have been not that hot but this May-June is hotter all ready which means July and August will be scorchers.

What's everybody think about the new rules regarding antibiotic use in livestock. As of 2017 won't be able to buy water soluble antibiotics over the counter. Looks like you will have to see a vet for a prescription.
I have some antibiotics and corid but never felt the need to use them. I do use medicated chick starter and then ivermectin when older for parasite control but zero antibiotics.
Seems to me the blame lies more on doctors for over prescribing antibiotics than farmers but I'm sure some of these big Ag places overuse the h*ll outta them.
Either way doesn't really affect, me just wondering if any of you guys use them.

Nice set up, I wish I could add an electric fence around my area... My yard is a combo cyclone/wood fence, then I have a second metal fence area with the coop inside that on top of bricks. I have had bird dogs climb the six foot fence to get at birds in the past.

Of course I also want cameras and motion sensitive lighting out there too... basically I want Fort Knox for a couple EEs LOL. I admit it I am Crazy Chicken Lady...

What size is the wire you used to make those coops?

I heard about this a few weeks ago, Sulmet is the only product I've been using, I've been to a half a dozen feed stores trying to stock up on it, but I've came up empty. Sulmet is a very good antibiotic.

I did not know this, bummer.

I have only used over the counter 1 time and that was preventative due to one sick duck when we had a large flock. I personally think Big Brother is trying to make life hard on the little farms more so than the Big Ag, Big Ag has Vets so they will just write the prescriptions and be no problem for them, it is the small time farmer & rancher that will now have to hire a Vet to give an animal a shot or a medication they used to administer without their help. Their are not enough Live Stock Vets for this law.

So back to the herbal closet, I hope people have been passing that knowledge down. I know a few things I was taught as a child or have picked up on forums from folks around the globe. Sounds like another feel good well intentioned law by people who have either no idea what family or small time farming looks like or how it works and or by people who are trying to create monopoly on animal medication access or are paranoid farmers are using the animal meds on themselves and not going through their healthcare system...

I remember the great Dandelion Scare in the early 2000's the FDA was going to ban it and make it like Marijuana just because a few people where making their own tea out of their yard weeds and that just needed to be stopped!(Never mind I can buy the tea). How dare they! They where self medicating! They where self diagnosing themselves, and the FDA had MDs on talk radio explaining why they needed to outlaw common flowers and weeds. As they envisioned all of America suddenly going out eating their landscaping. The impending Apocalypse of weed overdoses needed to be headed off at the pass. The FDA had a huge list of common weeds and even garden flowers they wanted to outlaw... it was beyond stupid, a total over reach of the law for a small portion of the population who does herbal medicine versus modern medicine and would make 90% of the nations property (home) owners have to use chemicals to kill all them weeds or risk fines, jail time and more by making everyone with a yard overnight criminals... thank god someone in Government woke up and got a brain and stopped the FDA. The makers of Round-Up could have made millions though.

So this seems like one of those laws meant to "help me", "help keep me safe", "for my own good" when in reality it is for someone else's own good by making us all go through hoops and thus pay more to get basic meds for livestock on the off chance we need it. Basically just another unnecessary hassle of all Americans.

I am cool with encouraging less use in Big Ag of meds through changing the Industrial System of Big Ag, one should follow the other naturally, it is the supper high animal density issue that made automatic medication a necessity... the approved USDA policies & regs in favor of mega farms is what created the need. Changing the environment animals are kept in changes the needs for how much meds are needed.

Bummer... Big Brother Cares... they all care so much.

The Control Freaks are on the job, keeping America Safe through stupid laws that do more harm than good once again.

Ha I do have cameras and let me tell ya after a year or so if I can always have them I would. My wife even said how its nice to view the whole yard whenever. I have a monitor mounted next to my t.v. really convenient
